385 kenmore sewing machine

385 just means it's a Janome badged for Sears. The actual model number is the first 4 or 5 digits after the 385 portion.. like 385.1234567890

Machines that don't reverse are often dirty or the lubricants are gummed up (try running the machine in 15 minute bursts, full throttle, with the needle out; sometimes that helps.) Otherwise: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091124135216AAUyR3H

How to unassemble and clean Janome sewing machine foot controller model 21371?

There are 4 screws on the bottom, 2 are under a rubber pad that can just as well be discarded. Be careful opening the 2 halves of the case, since the assembly is spring loaded. Note carefully the position of the wire bail as you open.
Your control is failing because the two resistive strips are dirty. Blow all the lint out the the case, and swab the two resistor strips with alcohol. Move the wiper arm so you can reach both ends of the strips.
To re-assemble, lay the bottom half on the table and place the plunger and wire bail in position. Then set the large ends of the springs over the round plastic projections in the plunger. Take the top half of the case (with all electrical parts) and engage the bottom end (away from the springs). Before pushing the top half closed, be sure that the small ends of the two springs fit around two screw heads.

White quilters star 1780 is running slow, how do I fix it? Have already cleaned feed dog and shuttle, what else can I do?

You can send out to repair to have it lubricated & oiled, or you can do this yourself. Not recommended though if you have pets or kids where you are working on machine. Remove needle, thread, bobbin. There are screws underneath. Don't lose them! One drop good quality oil on moving parts so lay machine back on a towel, remove screws, keep foot pedal up on table so you don't accidentally hot it with your foot. All gears that are not greasy get a very small dollop of lubricant (Singer makes a good one comes in red &white tube). All parts moving get the oe drop oil. Put plate back on, firmly tighten screws. Never lube or oil plastic parts! A drop of oil any metal screw located on top of machine. Lift machine up and if tip can be removed, you can check moving parts needing oil there and replace lid. If front section opens--left of needle bar--open it up and oil moving parts..I usually just apply one drop oil to TOP of needle bar Close lid. Put one drop oil on shuttle hook bottom left. Never oil tension discs. Run machine with scrap of fabric to get her nice and smooth sailing. If motor sounds like it's running heavy after that, take in for service, but unless motor needs replacement, you should see noticeable improvement immediately. Good luck and hope this helps! How to thread a bobbin

Which Singer machine do you have? I know how to wind and insert a full bobbin for some models.

Some wind the bobbin with it in the case. This is the case with my Touch & Sew. Inserting a full bobbin is simple. Open the slide plate and drop in the bobbin with the rings up. Make sure that to hold the bobbin thread so that it comes off at the left. Then close the slide plate and make sure that the end of the bobbin thread is coming through the notch. Hold onto the threads and turn the handwheel until the top and bottom thread come back up with a twist. To wind a bobbin for this machine, open the slide plate (some models have a little mark to line up the slide plate). Put in the empty bobbin and thread the top normally. Set the machine to straight stitch and push the bobbin wind button in. (This has a bulls-eye symbol on it.) Wrap the end of the top thread around the presser foot screw several times and hold onto the end. Step on the foot control to start winding. Keep winding until the bobbin is full. The thread wound onto the screw should break. Pull some extra thread and cut it to separate the top and bottom threads. Close the slide plate and set your desired stitch.

Other models are wound at the top of the machine. For some of with a drop-in bobbin, you need to bring the thread down to a catch and then off to the left to another catch. Some have a vertical bobbin. I don't remember if they all have a removable case. Those that do need the thread to come through a notch on the case that pulls the thread under a spring that keeps the bobbin tension. However you should check your manual. If you do not have a manual, check if one is available online. (http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals has many of the Singer manuals for sale or download.)

If you post a comment with the model of your machine, I'll give you a description of threading the bobbin or winding one.

The thread breaks after sewing about 4 inches.

You do not say what model you have. Check this site out, if you need a manual.

What you need to do is to give it a good cleaning.

MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE SCREWS WITH THE PARTS TAKEN OFF AND MAKE NOTE OF HOW YOU TAKE THING APART SO YOU CAN GET IT BACK TOGETHER

If this is the old metal machine, (I love them) remove the screws and plate on the top, (set this aside)

remove screw and part from the left side of machine, (set aside)

remove the needle (note how needle comes out, flat side in the back)

remove the needle plate

You are now able to see most of the inner workings of the machine

Using a can of air (do not put too close to machine parts) dust all the open parts. Can also use old fime paint brushes to get into dmall areas

now using ONLY sewing machine oil, TURN the hand wheel by hand, put a drop of oil on parts that go in and out of each other, rub over each other (on top, over the needle area and in the bobbin area, (IN bobbin area you can use a q-tip with oil to rub the area)

If turning the hand wheel by hand to oil moved freely, you can plug in machine and run machine to get the oil in all the parts (this will lubricate the parts you just oiled.

Put machine back together,

Use the air agsin to dust between the tension disks.

When winding the bobbin, make sure it winds even up and down.
thread machine and try

MAKE SURE YOUR BOBBIN THREAD AND TOP THREAD ARE PULLED TO THE BACK BEFORE SEWING AND HOLD THE THREADS FOR THE FIRST FEW SITCHES, IF NOT THE MACHINE WILL PULL THE THREADS AND YOU WILL GET BREAKAGE

GOOD LUCK

I have a quantum cxl. It will sew normal stiches but it will not sew the decorative stiches

The needle shaft sticks to the curved arm and won't come down because a piece of plastic, about an eighth of an inch thick had broken from age. It prevented the shaft from staying up on the needle arm. Open the cover, try to stitch decorative stitch and see what I mean. Purchase a package of 4-10 by 1/2 nut and bolt pack. Screw the nut all the way onto the bolt. Using needle-nosed plyers, Carefully bend the curved arm slightly, and place bolt into the hole on the top of the needle shaft. Nut will keep it in place. Lowering the needle shaft using wheel, carefully bend arm back in place. Try decorative stitch. It should work. It does for me.
