SOME WASHERS ARE WIRED TO AGITATE AND ADVANCE WITH THE LID SWITCH ACTIVATED. SOME STOP EVERYTHING WHEN THE LID IS UP. IF YOU HAVE A BAD LID SWITCH, IT WILL STOP BEFORE SPINNING OR DRAINING.
WAS THE TIMER IN THE OFF POSITION OR WAS IT STILL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CYCLE? IF IN MIDDLE OF CYCLE, POSSIBLE BAD LID SWITCH. IF AT END OF CYCLE, POSSIBLE BROKEN BELT OR MOTOR OVERLOAD TRIPPED.
TRY MOVING THE TIMER TO THE SPIN POSITION AND SEE IF IT DRAINS AND SPINS. COULD ALSO BE A RESTRICTION IN THE PUMP OR TUB NOT LETTING THE WATER OUT.

I have a frontload he washer. My question is, will using a regular laundry detergent instead of he laundry detergent cause problems with the washer.

top load detergent will suds a lot and detergents made for from load washers wont suds very much at all, suds ina front loader will cause it to not spin or drain very well while i know it is more expensive you should always use detergents with the HE logo on the package

Have a Kenmore 20902 top loading washer. Does aggitate in wash cycle, but wont spin in rinse. With drum empty, it will spin. Removed cloths, rung dry by hand and returned to drum. Still would not spin, but...

Your drum is in a sense sitting on a barring , it sounds like your barring is going out. Works with no weight, and if helping as you said. Normally means barring is worn out and can not handle any weight.

Won't spin.

Your washer obviously has been over-loaded. It trips the spin switch & prevents top-speed spinning. See that you load within the machine's user manual load, not more. You can even weigh your laundry before loading to see that you dont over-load. Also see that the laundry is evenly placed within the bucket. These are suggestions.
