Either the cpu blower is not working or the the air ventilation openings are closed. Use a brush to clean up all the openings for air flow all over the laptop. If possible use clean air under pressure towards the air openingsin co-operation with the brush cleaning. In case of using air under pressure, leave the laptop at least one hour after the cleaning to relax.
Start the laptop and check the results. In case of the problem still exists, the problem is at the cpu blower. In order to get at this blower you must open the laptop's case. Since this is not so easy I suggest to get the laptop at a technician asking for cleaning and checking the cpu ventilation.
In case you are capable of opening the case or if you come up with a problem, don't hesitate to post me a reply.

Your CPU is overheating, remove all power sources, turn it over an remove the bottom plate over the CPU.

It should be easy to find, there's a ventilator grill in the case nearby.

Then clear out all the dust and rubbish, a natural bristle paint brush is the best tool. Making sure all the dust and fluff is removed from and internal venting ducts.

Put it all back together and try again. Oh and becareful not to cover the ventilators when in use.

After installing/uninstalling programs, my laptop should restart to complete the process, but shuts down midway. I'd have to leave it for an hour or so, before turning it on again; otherwise it'll shut...

Apparently seems like your laptop is facing heating problem & its because your cooling system including fan inst working properly. You need to check if your fan is running at adequate speed and also there aren't any dust particles stuck in head sink on either side of your laptop. All you need to do is just to use an air blower and clean the fins of your heat sinks to make the air flow properly. Good Luck

Dell Inspiron 8600 - overheating and shutting down

Start by cleaning the fan and heat sink. Dirt or dust build up can cause them not to work as efficiently as they should. If cleaning doesn't fix it, you might consider replacing the fan and heat sink or purchasing a cooling pad.

Shutting off

i have the same problem...laptop randomly shuts down, but its even done it within a minute of turning it on so i don't think its a heat issue. Sometimes it'll run for over an hour with no problem and never shut down, but other times it randomly shuts down sometimes within a minute, sometimes maybe 10 mins, sometimes 30 mins or more ...its maddening! i'd love to find a solution if anyone's found one. Thanks.
