Mine did this too. It is the carbon brushes inside the motor that have gone out. Looking for replacements for the UDS1451VNR motor that is in it. Motors run about $95, brushes about $15 for te set if you can find them.

Hi there SmartAlec from NelsonVacuums.com.au here. Basically your motor is burnt out. It may run for a few more minutes or even an hour but it will need a new motor or need to be replaced. Sorry for the bad news. On the upside if you are in Australia i have the motors to suit most of the dysons on our website NelsonVacuums.com.au
Regards SmartAlec

My vacuum was making a funny noise and had a bad smell

Hi John, it's Jack at Dyson.

Most Dyson vacuums include a thermal cutout which shuts the machine down for protection if it starts to overhead. You should find it will run again after it's cooled down for around 2 hours.

This is likely to have been caused by a blockage, or because the filter is overdue for a wash. To prevent this from happening again, please follow the steps shown in our Support guide: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc08/dc08-standard/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-won-t-switch-on-or-cuts-out/my-machine-cut-out-whilst-i-was-using-it/how-to-wash-filters/check-the-floor-tool

In normal use, the filter needs to be washed at least once every 3-6 months, as shown in the video attached. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 12 hours for both sections of the filter to dry completely before replacing it.

If you'd like some further help from our experts after you've given both of these steps a try, please call the Dyson customer Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 01-475-7109 (IE).

Sounds as if there is something stuck in the vacuum causing the beater bar to stop turning while the belt continues to turn giving off the burning smell.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC15. From what you've described, it sounds as if the relief valve is activating - if you've already washed the filter, it may be activating due to a blockage in the machine. The easiest way to locate and remove any blockages is to follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=813&product=DC15-SY-STD

Although I note you've already washed the filter, you may want to take a look at the video below to make sure you've cleaned it as recommended. In normal use, this should be done at least once every 3-6 months. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 12 hours for the filter to dry completely before replacing it.

This should resolve the issue, but if you'd like any further assistance or advice, please call our Helpline free on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US).

Best wishes,

Jack

Sounds like your belt can either be rubbing against something or its stretched out. Either way you should check into getting the belt changed.

Dyson DC14 all floors.

sept 30,08 bought dc14 all flloor. After 3 to 4 uses it started making lots of noise when on carpet setting. I examined the roller brush and it was cracked at one end. I returned it Oct 13 ,08 and got another dc 14 all floor. Now this one after 2 uses has the same problem only a larger crack in the brush and a small piece of the brush broke off. Very dissapointed.

Dyson DC07 burning smell.

sounds like it is on the way out this may be because 1, you need to clean the filter cos when its dirty it stop air from going around the motor witch makes it get hot and overheat 2, also if you allow the bin to get to full this will also stop the motor from geting air to it so a good clean on your filter and bin will allow air to the motor then no overheating should accur
