Thanks Merle840, I had already tracked it down to the switch and replaced it when I got back home and got the FixYa email with your solution.

I was all ready to replace the fuel filter and the fuel pump. Then by accident, I held the key in the start position a little longer and the engine kept running. That meant it wasn't the filter or the fuel pump. I had already checked all the connections and fuses. It had to be something with the switch. I took the steering column housing apart ( 3 star screws on the bottom side), unplugged the wiring and took the switch housing off ( 3 star screws) and sure nuf, there was a burnt connection on the back side of the switch housing. I removed the key switch from the switch housing, took the old one to NAPA and made sure the new one matched up. BINGO A relatively simple project once I found the problem. 3 hours to track it down and about 20 minutes to FixYa. The new switch housing was $30.25 at NAPA.

I hope this info can help somebody else one day.

i have an 88 jeep cherokee that is doing the same thing. so i bypassed the switch on the column( the one that the wires plug into up under the dash). so that would mean if that part was bad i just fixed it. but that didnt work. it still dies. as soon as i take the starter wire(green) and take it off the power wire it shuts off. so what could it be? please help thanks

Turn the AC system off, this includes defrost settings as well. I think your AC compressor is locked up on the engine.

Whats wrng with my 97 jeep grand cherokee it died and wnt start bak up it turns over but acts like not getting gas. I sprayed starter fluid and it started a sec thn died.

It is not getting gas. Could be bad fuel pump, and most are now in the fuel tank.If it is the fuel pump and it is in the tank, this can be a fairly major expense.($400-$500)This is not an unusual problem, and many auto repair shops can do it.

Engine quit when stopped at stop light. Acted as if it was choking then died. Tried restarting. Turns over strong, no start. Thought maybe no gas. Added gas after about 30 minutes. Started first try....

Sounds like the fuel pump is going out. Replace the filter first, as it's only $10. If that doesn't fix it, then it's probably the pump, which is $250.

My Saturn has been sitting in my driveway for about a year and a half. We just replaced the battery and the fuel filter and when I try to start the car, the engine turns over, starts for a minute, and then...

If the gas in tank is that old you need to drain it. Once you have good new, clean fuel in tank. Turn key to run position,(do not energize starter just want red lights on dash to come on) listen for fuelpump whine. It will shut off. Turn key off.Turn key to run again, listen for fuelpump again. Turn off key again. Repeat this procedure total 5 times. On last time turn key to engage starter. It should build up enough pressure & fuel & start right up.
