There could be two reasons first IRQ conflict secondly usb driver. check whether there is any irq conflict while you connect your mouse to laptop. secondly update usb driver on the laptop on which the mouse doesn't works.

Sounds like the track pad button is broken. Unfortunately that would mean it needs physically replaced. I might suggest using a USB mouse instead.

Please uninstall the whole driver package and also clean the registry fo the software via START--RUN--REGEDIT- and re-install the same. It would work FINE

First of all check whether the touch pad is lock (Fn+F7(?)). If you use an external mouse/ usb mouse, check usb cable connection, as long as you didn't drop it on the floor it should be ok. If the built in touch pad doesn't work, could be caused by ribbon cable connectivity that has dirt or moist. To fix it need to open the upper case

boot to safe mode and test the touchpad. if it works on safemode, run system restore. if it does not, try reinstalling the touchpad driver.

Usually Vista does not need driver to install an USB Mouse.
Try this:
Turn off the laptop, then put the mouse connection. Turn on again. See if now it is working. The mouse should be connected in "off"
If still does not work, try put in other USB port of the laptop. Usually a laptop has at least 2 USB port. Remember to connect it always in "off".

This usually happens so you dont have 2 mice running at once. Unplug the new mouse and your touchpad should come back.
