This may not be damage, it could be the wrong driver.
Go to the control panel, look at the device menu to see if the display is possibly marked as not working correctly.
Then look at the display settings to see if new driver alternatives have appeared.

Incorrect drivers can damage a display; I've seen it happen (unfortunately).

A typical laptop battery of tests, including games, applications, and a couple other areas. Time constraints limited the amount of testing we could get done before the NDA lift (and it's already a few hours late), but we will be providing a follow-up article with further testing and information. That said, if there are any specific areas that you'd like to see tested, feel free to e-mail me or leave a comment.

Acer aspire 5600. Did a system restore and the computer would not start the windows programme then stopped trying and comes up with 'ntldr is missing' and won't get past that. Any advice would be much...

Sometimes the only way to repair XP is to reinstall. You do not have to wipe your partition and start over. Just as with previous versions of Windows you can reinstall right over top of an existing setup. This has the advantage of retaining your installed applications, data and settings. You will lose previously saved System Restore Points but System Restore will begin creating new restore points again immediately following the Repair Install. You will need to reinstall SP2 and any Critical Updates from the Windows Update Site. Be aware that a Repair Install will leave your system vulnerable to the Blaster and Welchia worms. Do not go on line until you have enabled XP's firewall first. Then visit the Windows Update Site to patch your system It is always prudent to backup important data before you make changes to XP. There are two approaches. The first one should be used if you can still boot to your Windows Desktop. Simply pop the XP CD into the CD-Rom drive and select Install->Upgrade[recommended]. This will install XP overtop of itself in the same way as upgrading from a previous setup. However if your version is an OEM version then you will not have this option. If you do not see the option to Upgrade[recommended] DO NOT choose New Install as that will either overwrite your current setup completely or give you a dual boot setup. Also if you have an older version of XP and have upgraded to a new service pack you will get a message stating that a newer version of Windows was found and you will not be able to run the Upgrade.

1-Boot with the Windows XP CD and at the Setup Screen press the Enter Key
2-You will be taken to the Windows XP Licensing Agreement. After reading the agreement press F8 to proceed
3-
The next screen gives you the option to do a fresh (clean) install or to repair the selected Windows XP installation. To run a Repair Install Press "R" at this time.
***CAUTION*** if you do not see the option to repair the selected Windows XP installation DO NOT choose the option to continue installing a fresh copy without repairing as that will overwrite your data and cause unrecoverable data loss.
Windows XP will copy the necessary files to your Hard Drive to begin the installation and will then reboot. You will see the message that informs you to "Press any key to boot the CD". Do not press any keys this time just wait a few seconds and the Windows Startup Screen will be displayed. Following this you will be greeted by the Windows XP Setup Screens.
When Setup has completed you should find all of your previously installed apps and settings are intact.

Xp is not offcial

Please expalin.
I know you can Upgrade to XP at a discount from NT (actually it works from any pervious version of Windows to XP) but there is no Update from NT to XP.
I've been doing IT work for a long time, and I am a registered Microsoft Partner, and I have never heard of an Update to XP.

If you do mean upgrade to XP, here's how I would do it.
Get a copy of XP (preferably Pro, the upgrade version is fine, and you can still fine it a number of places). What they don't tell you about upgrade versions is that it is a full copy of XP, that just have a sequence that need the previous key to continue.
Use the XP disk to format, and begin the load.
During the install, it will ask for the qualified version of Windows you are upgrading from. You put in the NT CD, and it will continue the install (you just have to swap CD's back and forth a couple of times).
The previous version does not need to be installed.

If the NT is the only disk you have, and you don't want to purchase the XP upgrade, there is a whole process that you have to go through.
You do have to create 3 floppies that have the boot and load sequence.
This is not a real user friendly install, but it can be done.

I personaly would spend the time and money to find a copy of XP. Here again, your end product is going to be something you are much happier with.
