Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

1 Answer

I had problems with an extremely slow pc. I replaced mcafee with Norton 360. Norton found a few trojans, etc. All removed and i undertook a disk defragment. Then Windows xp home edition did not start in normal mode. I then went to last known good configuartion that worked (30 April) which was prior to Norton being installed. I cannot start windows normally.

Both Norton and Mcafee are known for slowing pc's down.

Boot your PC as normal, but as its starting keep pressing the F8 key until some options appear on your screen. On of which will be "boot windows in safe mode".

Select that option and a windows shell should open.

Once open got to Start - Control Panel - Add/remove programmes and uninstal both mcafee and norton.

Once complete, reboot and see how you PC runs.

Assuming its working ok now, go back to your control panel - security centre - enable windows firewall.

Go online to "Filehippo.com" and download and istall the free version of AVG (anti virus software) once installed let it scan your system.

Then go back to Filehippo.com, download and install Ccleaner. This has loads of tools, :-
1) Cleaner clears all the tempory internet files of your pc.

2) Startup - you can reduce the number of programes you want th start up when booting.

You don't need any here because you can access all programmes via start but I'd leave AVG and any securtiy related to start and delete the rest. But its probably better to just disable the rest until you're happy with which programmes auto start.

Good Luck

Sounds like someone managed to get a "backdoor virus" on your computer that allows a third party access to your computer for sending spam, Denial of Service Attacks, etc....

That activity consumes computer resources slowing down your operations to a crawl.

Most good anti-viruses will remove them I use Norton 360 and a few others to catch anything the other misses. I Use Norton 360 for the firewall...

Antivirus installation

There are two ways of installing antiviruses. 1. Either by using a disk that we generally receive from Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro. 2. Or by downloading it online.
There are different kind of antiviruses, anti-spywares, anti-malwares available now a days. You can choose any one of them..
1. Super antispywares 2. Malwarebytes 3. Trojan remover Norton, Mcafee, Trend Micro, Bit Defender.

Nortong 360 by comcast....trying to install and I keep getting the error message..."error writing to disk"

Run the following symantec tool to remove old download manager entries:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton/support/special/sa/frm/_result.jsp?said=Dwn_Mgr_clean&productstyle=&prodid=

I had this problem as well as I used a Norton product before I switched to McAfee because of Comcast. The install worked for me after this simple tool cleaned the Norton Download Manager registry entries.

Virus

Install an updated full version of antivirus. Your antivirus might-be-out of date. I recommend you to use avast or avg 8. They will remove all the viruses they detect from your system. But remember to install only one antivirus because installing more than one antivirus can clash down your computer. After installing the new antivirus, scan your computer and delete all the detected viruses. Delete also your temporary internet files, cookies, cache, etc. To do this, follow these steps:
  • Go to Start, Control Panel.
  • Network and Internet Connections
  • Internet Options
  • In the Browsing History, click Delete...
  • Delete Browsing History box appears, Click Delete All button found at the bottom.
  • Reboot your computer.
