Question about Kodak Easyshare C182 12MP Digital Camera
If you've recently dropped the camera you may have damaged the lens zoom mechanism. This causes the camera to shut down, preventing further damage. There's no safe DIY fix for that, and the camera will require professional repair.
Another possibility is a buildup of dust, dirt, etc. in the lens mechanism. This is routinely caused by using the camera in dusty/sandy outdoor settings, or by keeping the camera in a case or camera bag. Sounds odd, but the cases build up dust which eventually ends up in the lens area. You can try blowing out the area with air from a compressor or keyboard cleaner (canned air), but this problem often requires professional repair/cleaning.
Your problem could also be power related. If your rechargeable battery is more than a year old it may need to be replaced. Old batteries appear to charge up OK, but they frequently do not hold a charge sufficient to operate the camera. Before you replace the battery though, wipe the contacts on it, and in the camera's battery compartment, with a clean dry cloth to remove corrosion that may have built up. Heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a fine wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper. After the cleaning, give the battery a good charge and then see if the camera is working.
If repairs are needed, take the camera to a Kodak dealer/repair point (NOT the camera department in a chain store) and also check Kodak customer service on line at www.kodak.com. Be sure to get a firm price, not just an estimate, before you commit. The price of a fix can approach the cost of a new camera, and repairs typically only carry a 30-day warranty.
