Hard Drive Problem/Tear In Ribbon

I just put in a new hard drive. I had 120gb, but wanted more space, so put in a 320. I also was recently getting some strange error messages upon bootup that was causing me to think there might be a problem with the 120, since it was a refurbished, not new, drive. Sometimes, it wouldn't allow me to get to the log in screen, sometimes it would...in a word, very 'inconsistent'.
I don't have the wording of the error message right now....if it comes up again(I hope it doesn't), I will include it in a subsequent posting as it may give more information as to what may be wrong.
I've had the 320 in for about 5 days and haven't gotten the error message I was getting with the 120, making me think it was the old hard drive. I did do a chkdsk /f and a chkdsk /r and both came up no problems, so I wasn't sure.
But, unfortunately, when I booted up today, those same strange messages came up with the 320. I decided to take a look inside my machine to see if I could 'see anything' out of the ordinary. Well, all the wires looked okay, but I DID notice a 'tear' in part of the ribbon(I have a desktop IDE hard drive, about 5 year old Dell computer). This may be the cause of my problem. What do you think? If there is a 'tear' in that 'ribbon' what might happen? I have no idea how it tore. It's not a real bad tear, but noticeable.
So I reconnected my hard drive to the other place inside you can connect a drive. This ribbon looks intact. So far no problem, or error messages. Was this a wise, logical thing to do? What diagnostics should I run? I already ran the chkdsks, I don't know what else to do, other than hope by connecting my hard drive to the other place for an internal drive, that it may bypass the ribbon that is 'torn'. I would tend to think it would.
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Yes I plan to replace that ribbon. But for the past few days I have connected it to the other ribbon and connector and have had absolutely no problems, which I am most thankful for. I even ran a diagnostic at the website manufacturer of my hard drive, Western Digital and it passed, so I ruled that out. Thanks for your reply.

First you have done the right thing. secondly i suggest that you get a new ribbon, as the one in there is also quite old.

My hard disk hide 90gb from 120gb. how can solve


Go to Start > Run (search in Win7) type diskmgmt.msc Enter. In Disk Management right click on the unallocated space and choose New Partition. Use the wizard to create a new partition. This will use the missing space to create a new drive.

In Windows 7 you now have the option of expanding and using the free space to make the original partition larger. There may be some limitations, and you will have to create a new partition anyway.

You also have the option of deleting everything and configuring the drive as you see fit, and of course this does not apply to the active drive with Windows on it. All data will be lost.

When I attach the transfer cable to the 120GB hardrive it only shows it as a usb drive with 16GB of space. I checked the hardrive on my computer and it shows 120GB of space, how do I get it to show as a...


16 GB is the maximum USB storage the XBox will allow, but you may have up to two devices connected at the same time (which means nothing for your current situation, sorry). This is Microsoft's way of saying you should've opted for the larger internal hard drive.

Hi there, i have a acomata external hard drive, i did format and now its showing me that i have a 7.50GB disk space but actual disk space is 120GB. Can you please help me to find out why is it like that?


format again (assuming your using xp) make sure that the format is FAT-32 or FAT-16 and that the size is 120gb. Then check the drive properties and see if any space has been used. if so how much then post that and i'll work from there.

Also look at your hard drive - >
right click on "My computer" -> manage -> disk management. There you should see all info about your hard drive. Maybe it's splitted in two partitions

Verbatim 120GB external hard drive


goto Control Panel, administrative tools, Computer Management, Disk Management, If it pops up a new disk install wizard follow the directions in it. If not then find the new disk that has no partition on it, right click on that drive to create a partition, then right click on the drive to format it, if it hasent done so already.

Hi,
if the datas aleady deleted, then you have nothing to lose. Right ?
What you need is a 2.5 to 3.5 inch IDE ribbon cable connector.
this will enable you to put the drive into an IDE slot on the PC internal motherboard ( primary/secondary )
Unless it,s already 3.5"
boot the computer, see if it recognises the drive. And format it.
then you may be able, to re-fit back into the external casing, and use as an external again.

HARD DISK CAPACITY PROBLEM


When your hard disk capacity says 320, that does not mean 320 GB fo free space, Total capacity is 320 GB, from this space required for the partition table, boot sector, etc will be taken, Dont worry only the available free space will be shown.

This is not a problem, so dont worry.

How to install a new seagate hard drive?


I have one thats ide ultra, & my computers see it as a disc drive, like a cd drive when i put it in an external seagate case. but when i put it in as an internal it shows up in cmos w/ 320 g space, & no matter which pin config i use it doesnt show when the os is booted. I enabled LBA like it says on the drive, & tried all the other options in CMOS & havent got it to go yet, but it sounds like its running perfectly when it powers up. it'll go, but its actin crazy. ill post it when i get that bastard.
