Question about Computers & Internet

System isn't booting past the black and white DOS screen. Already paid £50 for a guy to fix it last week, and its done it again!! There was a ocassional fault before, which was sorted by pushing the hard drive plug in a little more, came loose with time, but this seems different and not solved by the same action. I need someone who can fix this for sure, or say forget it - buy a new one etc.

I would say your HDD has gone faulty, you may need to replace it, that is an easy enough job. You need a new HDD, a Windows install CD/DVD. Install HDD set as master, set PC's BIOS to Boot from CD/DVD, Boot from the Windows Install CD/DVD and simply follow instructions, After you finish, you should then install all the Drivers for your system, you can download them from, the manufacturers website, for your exact make and model. (Often it is good, to download and store these for immediate installation, handy if the Ethernet or WiFi didn't work straight off.) Then you will have returned your PC to the factory fresh condition, ready to start all again. A HDD is about $100.00, or so

It may be just a fault of wrong shut down ..so ..to see if it is still booting up ..just open it ..press del just when it shows the first devices to go into bios..There you have to choose the optimal factory defaults (probably F9) and save changes with F10 and enter ..this will reboot it and it will be on optimal defaults ..let it boot up ..and see whats doing ..probably it will boot or it will get into the menu where you have to choose last known config that worked..and thats all...
If it something worse than that just needs a re-installation cause it is either missing important files for boot..or it is beyond the point where you ca save anything from the C partition ..(viruses and other bugs )

Missing boot manager

You will need a operating system disk or a repair disk to fix it. Insert it in the drive then boot from it. You want to get to a dos command prompt (black screen with white lettering) and type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

Reboot and see if the problem is solved. If not get back to the dos command prompt and run the check disk utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc or a operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot from it. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with white letters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice the percentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run to completion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows. Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair when the options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recovery console and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

Configuring updates screen

Try booting up in Safe Mode and see what happens.

Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFE MODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will look different to you, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this is normal. If it boots up ok, then do a restart into your normal windows mode.

Try running the check disk utility.

What's yowhen i try to start the comp. it tells me at the windows boot manager that i have the options to repair but if there is no disk call manufacturer because it tells me that the file ntoskrn

If you can somehow get to a dos prompt (black screen with white writing) then you can fix it without a repair disc or system disc. If not, just borrow a Repair Disc or Operating System Disc from a neighbor, friend, family member or co-worker. Just make sure that the disk is the same as your operating system. Look at your Certificate of Authentication (COA) Sticker that is affixed to you laptop. Most times it is on the bottom or inside the battery compartment. It will tell you which operting system you have and it will have a series of 5 letters and numbers which is your product key. If you have Windows Vista Home Premium, or Windows 7 Home Premium, or Windows XP Professional, then borrow that type of operating system disc or repair disc.

Never, Ever, Never, buy a another computer without a cd drive or you'll be faced with your current situation.

I don't know exactly how you are going to get this done because you need a cd drive to do it. If somehow you can get to a dos prompt you might be able to fix it and run the steps below.

You will need a operating system disk or a repair disk to fix it. Insert it in the drive then boot from it. You want to get to a dos command prompt (black screen with white lettering) and type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
