This problem should be addressed by Gmail. It could be anything from something running on your computer/browser to an internal issue on their server. The customer service team at Gmail would be more then happy to help find the problem with you. I wish I could help more but I am a casual user of their mail services like you.
Always sign into any e-mail site your using directly from their web address in this case: www.gmail.com if at all possible.
When in doubt, just type the name of the site directly or use trusted favorites/bookmark links you have saved. If you are already doing this then Gmail Customer Service will need to help you further.
You might find something by clicking on the little drop down arrow to the right of your gmail name in the top right corner of the window. click on account then security
This happened to me until I installed the activeX control. Were you prompted for that, and did it install successfully?
After the activeX installed, did it also prompt you to install the secure certificate to access the site without IE prompting about invalid certificates?
Since you've tried multiple machines, I doubt security settings on IE are causing the problem. But my switch did these two actions before I was able to login successfully.
