Belt on craftsman 42" riding tractor

There should be a decal on the deck with the diagram. To change, first remove belt from engine pulley.(front pulley under emgine) and go from there.

I have a 42" mtd lawn tractor. The blades do not

The blades engage via a belt, that goes around a series of pullies, one of those pullies is a tension pulley that is connected to your pto lever by springs, the engine has nothing to do with your blades until after you engage the lever, I would check your belt. It could be loose, and if you engage the blades it could take it a few to get up to speed, thus making it seem like its only when the engine is warm.
Does everything else work fine? As in the tractor moves when the blades are not engaged?

Change PTO cable

Here's a link to the owner's manual:

Here's a link to the parts manual: Just above the title on the document is a link that allows you to download the PDF document so you can read it. On page 14 in the circle is what I think you're looking for.

Sorry I can't help you more. I'm really not familiar with this tractor. Mine has an electrical clutch to engage the blades. Hopefully this will help.
