Question about Nintendo Wii Console
OK, first the bad news, usually 'black screen of death' occurs when carrying out an update, usually request by some games before the game will work, if this update hasn't been performed correctly, or a power outage whilst updating, this will 'brick' your wii, pretty much non recoverable, send it back to Nintendo for fix.
If the wii has been modded in anyway, to allow homebrew, there will be/was a homebrew channel, some applications can cause the black screen. Usually this can be rectified by looking through the forums where the homebrew os was downloaded from.
However, If, as you said, this has been a progressive error, the fact a disc was being read, but then black screened with the 'eject disc'/'disc read' error and now it isn't reading any disc would indicate that the dvd drive can not read the disc, the easiest solution for this would be to replace the dvd drive.
Although it may be possible to just replace the lens unit or motor, it would depend upon how adept you are at DIY. These tend to be a little expensive, £10 for the motor, £20 for the lens to £70 for a dvd drive. Although these can be sourced on ebay for cheaper - take the usual precautions though, as there are some pretty unscrupulous people selling failed drives. Refurbished drives from around £35 do exist too
You can compare your drive with a drive database using your wii mode/serial number http://www.wiidrives.com/list to make sure you're getting the correct drive model.
