When I fold the screen back into the camera with the lcd for viewing it becomes dark and 'contrasty' unless I angle the camera upwards - is this a 'design fault' or peculiar to my camera?

The LCD screen is blank or appears dark or black.
Follow these general guidelines to troubleshoot when the LCD screen is blank or appears dark or black.

IMPORTANT: If model-specific information is required to complete any of the steps in this solution, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the product. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® Support Web site.

    1. Ensure the camera is turned on.
    2. If applicable, ensure the lens cover has been removed before taking pictures.
    3. Ensure the LCD backlight is turned on by pressing the DISPLAY button several times until the screen appears.
NOTE: Depending on the camera model, the DISPLAY button may be labeled as DISP or with a display icon [FIG. 1]. This button could be a standalone button or incorporated as one of the control arrow buttons depending on the model of camera.

    4. If operating the camera with a battery, ensure the battery is fully charged.
    5. Ensure the battery is inserted properly in the camera.
    6. If operating the camera with the power adapter, ensure it is plugged into a working AC outlet.
    7. Ensure no Audio/Video (A/V) cables are connected for viewing pictures on a TV; the LCD screen will not display when an A/V cable is connected.
    8. Perform a reset procedure on the camera.

The troubleshooting steps listed above should resolve your issue. If you have completed all of the steps and the issue is not resolved, service may be required. The Sony Service Web site at http://eservice.sony.com/ can assist you in obtaining service from a Sony Service Center or locating a Sony Authorized Servicer.

How to initialize or reset a digital still camera back to factory settings.

Some cameras have a RESET button built into them or a menu option to reset the camera to the default settings. The manuals of some camera models may have instructions on how to initialize the camera, which is another name for resetting the camera to the default or original factory settings. Refer to the instruction manual supplied with your camera for specific information regarding the availability of a RESET button or menu option to initialize or reset the default settings. Manuals are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.

Otherwise, continue with the manual reset procedure below:

    1. Turn off the camera.
    2. Ensure the camera is not connected to an AC power adapter.
    3. Remove the battery from the camera for 15 seconds.
    4. Reinsert the battery.
    5. Turn on the camera.

NOTE: If the issue is not resolved by performing a reset procedure, service may be required.

Have you tried pressing the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

Dark Screen

Your lens can not open the shutter, or CCD is dead. If you kept your camera in your pocket, most likely fine dust got in the lens and ultimetly between the shutter blades and now due to friction they can't open. But if you kept your camera clean, then it is dead CCD. You can have it fixed by replacing the CCD or the entire lens, but in particular this SD1000 camera the main board components can go wrong too. You can sell it "as is" on ebay for $50-70 and buy a working one for 80-90, the difference would be $20-30.

LCD Display Blank

I have a sony cybershot DSC-S650, the LCD was very dark and could not see anything except if I pointed it at a bright object, everything else worked ok. I could take pictures but could barely see them in playback as well.

I took it to Sony authorised repair outlet and was told the CCD was damaged, they charged me USD $55 to repair it (in Quito, Ecuador)

Dropped camera-two corners dark

Check what the actual pictures look like when they are downloaded to PC or to print. The problem may only be on the screen. It may be very expensive to replace the screen, but you might be able to live with it?

Good Luck
