  1. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
  2. In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.
  3. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
  4. In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.
  5. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
  6. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
Note After you remove the UpperFilters registry entry and the LowerFilters registry entry, you may lose functionality in certain programs such as CD recording programs. In this scenario, you must reinstall any affected programs. If the problem recurs, contact the program vendor to determine whether an update is available for the program.

Why wont my computer play cd's

If the CD is a cd you purchased, it coudl be that your CDROM laser eye is dirty or damaged. If the CD is a "burned" CD-R or CD-RW, your CDROM may not be able to read them.

If the CDROM is a CD-RW then i woudl say that the eye is either dirty, weak, or bad.

I had the computer reset to factory settings and cannot play CD's now. I get a message that says "You don't have a disc drive capable of playing DVD's or CD's. See less

Do you see the CDrom drive from the Device Manager? Right click on My Computer and click Manage. Click Device Manager and on the right panel, expand the DVD/CDROM drives. Check if your cdrom is on the list. If you can see it, try to right click that and Update the driver. You will need to have the installation disk for your cdrom.

If you dont have an installation disk, try to right click it and choose uninstall the drive. Next, you reboot the computer. The system should rediscover the drive.

If this does not work, please let me know.

My cd drive will read cds but not dvds i try to istall somethig it wont work

Hi dkush29306,

while the other two posters have pointed out the obvious, that CDROM drives only read CDs, and that you need a DVD drive to read DVDs, i would like to add something to this.

I will asume you have a CDROM COMBO Drive, that *should* play CDRs and DVDs.

if you find it does spin CDs up and read them, but not DVDs then i might be able to offer some suggestions.

firstly, make sure there is no software conflicts (like two CD Writing softwares trying to use the CD Drive at the same time.. ). you shouldnt have to worry about drivers for the CDROM, as the default OS ones should suffice. but they may be corrupt. you could goto Device Manager if you are on Windows, and uninstall and reinstall the driver for the CDROM. it should find it automatically in the install wizard.

ok at this point i don't see how software could cause any other issue , so we should look at it being a hardware issue:

if you have the ability, try changing the IDE Ribbon Cable that connects the CDROM to the Motherboard. if that doesnt work, try changing which plug in the IDE cable the CDROM plugs into. these plugs usually have a blue plug at one end (motherboard end), and there is two plugs at the other end, or master and slave. keep the jumper pin on the CDROM set to Cable Select, so you dont need to change it to slave, when its plugged into the slave port, or master pin if set to the master port.

finally, if none of that helps (and it probably won't ) you might find that the actual fault is due to the laser in the CDROM not focusing tightly enough and therefore cannot read the data on a DVD ROM because of this. the only way to tell if this is ok or not, is to plug it into another computer and see if it can read DVDs.

you might just be better off spending 20-50$ and buying a new CDROM Combo drive from your local computer hardware store.

When i turn on my Notebook it freezes at the asus logo i can enter my bios but it wont let me boot my recovery cd so if you know how to fix this problem and make my pc work again this would be great thank...

If you can enter the bios setup screen than set your boot priority at boot from CDROM. Save the settings, put in the recovery CD, let the computer start, and it should boot from the CD. If it still does not boot from the CD, than the CDROM drive itself my be the problem. If you had some work done on it recently, then chances are who ever did the work did not connect the CD Drive right, this is just a possible cause of the problem. Or it could be the drive itself is dead.

Simply change the ROM to DVD RW drive since this is an old PC and now days nobody uses a dvd rom but a dvd writer. It will be worth it since it can do all the functions and is also more hardy........sodeep

I cannot boot windows xp

Hi praph_wicked, normal order would be, floppy drive first, CDROM second & Primary hard disk drive third.
How ever if your bios does not comply you can always press the F8 key every two seconds & that should bring up (Please select boot device). Which will look like this;

54d9788.jpg
Choose the CDROM drive with the windows CD in it.
If you have just one CDROM drive, make sure the jumper on the back side of the CDROM is set to "Master". If you have two CDROM drives connected, set one as master & the other to slave.
If using an IDE cable for the two CDROM drives. The CDROM at the end of the data connector is to be set as master, the 2nd CDROM connects to the next IDE connector & Its jumper is set to slave.

Good luck!
Mike

Unable to detect cdrom on nec laptop

You need to check if it is a specific disc isssue or driver error or if it is the actual cdrom drive that is not functioning correctly. Please go to device managers and see if your cd rom drive is working correctly, then post back.
