Front load washer - loud banging noise and wont spin fast

I have a Kenmore front load washer. It sounds like there is a loose part or something inside the tumbler. With each ratation something is hitting something. You can mannual turn the tumbler and hear that somethign is loose. The washer still washes but will not spin fast. It starts to spin (you can hear the loose part still) then it stops and tries the other direction and never actually spins fast. Clothes end up clean but really wet.

I think you Number 2 possibility is the issue. When I stick my hand in and move the stainless steel interior there is lots of movement as if it is not attached to the tub. I can push it back and forth and up and down. If I spin it there is defintely a loud clunk. What does it mean that the bearing is bad? Is this a fixable problem? Is it part of the 10 year tu warranty? Or is it a new washer?

It sounds like it could be one of a couple things. It could be the pulley that attaches to the back shaft of the basket has come loose and is hitting on the tub, you would have to take the back off the machine and look at the pulley to tell.

The rear bearing in the tub has gone bad and the inner basket is rubbing on the outer tub. To find out reach inside and see if you can move the stainless steel tub up and down, if you hear a clunking when you do this or it has a lot of movement independent of the outer tub the bearing is bad

Something has broken off of the tub and is moving around inside between the tubs. No way to find out unless you take it all apart.

The second two are something that are very time consuming repairs.

Let me know if you have questions.

    Hi J.C,

It sure does sound like the rear bearing. On this model the bearing is part of the rear tub assembly, if the bearing is too warn it can damage the shaft on the basket also.

It is a very time consuming repair, to take a guess I would say it would run about $600.00 parts and labor to repair.

I am not familiar with the warranty, but I would check that first before buying a new one. If you end up not having warranty (as much as I like to repair things) I would have to recommend not putting the effort into this one.

Open the cabinet top and check along the sides for a broken or out-of-position damper. Shake the mechanism in several directions to help locate. Hope this helps!

Making loud banging noises. Sounds like something is inside, but nothing is. Something seems to be between the basin(?) and its casing.

It is very common for an item to get stuck between the basin and casing. You can drain the washer and spin the basin manually a few times in either direction. It should spin smoothly, but with some resistance. You may need to remove the front cover by typically lifting the top enough the loosen the front panel, then inspect the perimeter of the basin and the condition of the belt and motor. Remove anything that doesn't belong (i.e. a sock or zipper!)
Hope this helps! Rate my solution!

Washer sounds like off balance during spin

old duets have nut on rear pulley that becomes loose. remove rear panel and tighten nut. check while spinning by hand if pop is felt. if it rotates smoothly then you may need new shocks on tub
