Hi,

You do not have to install driver for firewire.

Connect your camera using a firewire (IEEE1394/ilink) cable and switch it on in playback mode.

Check the IEEE1394 Bus Host Controllers is enabled in the Device Manager of Windows Operating System.

Then you can use windows moviemaker to capture and edit..
Tick the more settings box in the capture settings window and choose DV-AVI from the list.

NOTE: You may also use the software on the cd for transferring your videos and still images (if your camera takes still pictures).

Hope this helps.

How can i connect my camera to my pc because my windows is saying unknown device?

Most MiniDV camera have USB and Firewire port.
USB is used to transfer from SDCard to PC.
While FireWire (also called IEEE 1394) is used for video transfer into computer. All the drivers needed are part of windows OS (IEEE 1394).
Invariably today's laptops and yester-years desktops do NOT have firewire inbuilt. The only thing you are going to need is a cable and firewire card (IEEE 1394) If you computer does not have one.

Moreover, you will need a capture software. You have Windows movie maker, But its not going to do justice to the camera, better off getting a good editor, such as Adobe Premiere, or Sony Vegas, the software is about the best you can get but not easy to use, and takes some time to get to know, both offer 30 day trials.

I have tried to connect my Canon XM2 to my IMac via firewire, but it is not 'seen' by IMovie, FCE or FCP, so I can't capture anything. Thanks

Open the System Profiler on the Mac and establish if the camera is connected to the Mac's firewire BUS. If not, try another cable and also test is the camera's firewire port is working. It's either a cable or socket issue. Some cameras require that the menu of the camera be set to output over firewire, check this as well.

I have connected my canon xm2 to the computer via the usb cable but nothing is happening? how do i get my videos on the computer?

It looks like the USB port on this camera is used to transfer stills only. The camera has a DV port for a "Firewire" connection to stream video to a computer, but most PCs don't have such a port (Macs do). You can add Firewire ports to a PC using an add-on card. You will need a cable too. These things are available cheaply on eBay or Amazon.

The software needed and manuals for this camera are available for download from

How do I transfer the footage I recorded to PC?

The USB cable is only to download still images recorded on the memory card, using the software that came with the camera. To download video, you need to connect to a computer with a Firewire cable, and have video editing software on your computer to communicate with the camera.

Recording to pc from camera

If the laptop doesn't have a FireWire port (you are using the FireWire output on the cam, right?) you can buy an express card (or PCMCIA card if that's the port on your Packard Bell) with a FireWire port. They are not expensive, and that sould solve your problem.

Dv out no longer deems to work on dm xm2

Sounds like the DV Port has suffered a short circuit. Unfortunately, the only way to fix this, is to take it to a reputable camera repair shop, or send it to cannon if it is under warranty.
