1 Answer

Will start, but dies soon after. There is no choke on this mower. Engine speeds up and slows down before dying.

The float in the bowl and needle needs to be changed or cleaned real good. The float is opening up the needle enough to get it running but not floating in the fuel bowl to keep the right amount going to carb.

Testimonial: "I got it running by cleaning the spark plug and cleaning off the dirt around the outside of what I assume is the carburetor. Will have to see about finding a service manual to do as you suggest. It does appear to be a dirt issue. Thanks very much for your advice! "

One other thing I forgot to mention. Take the cover off the carb (breather) and if you can get it to run, spray a small amount of starting fluid as it runs. If the mower runs as you spray starting, then the float is most likely the problem. The smell of gas gives me a headache, but dip your finger into the gas and see if it has a pronounced gas smell, if it doesn't the gas may have a small amount of water which causes the plug to foul and from you cleaning the plug and it starting, is a good chance the gas is watery or lost the ability to combust.

Pull the throttle control out of choke once the engine starts. Otherwise it will stall.

JD L120 riding mower keeps dying on me

Loosen fuel cap 1 turn to see if it will stay running.Theres a tank breather hole/vent in the cap and when it becomes plugged no air can get into fuel tank when fuel is used, can also be a plugged fuel filter.

Lawn mower stays running on jumper cables but once disconnected it shuts down when choke is engaged

if it is already running and you "engage" the choke, you will flood the engine with too much gas and it will sputter and die. the only time you engage the choke is to start the engine when it is cold. if the mower dies when you remove jumper cables, and you leave the choke alone, you need to have someone look at your charging system.

Engine dies but starts again but won't continue to run . Was driving home last night and all of a sudden noticedI was losing speed and couldn't excilerate. Pull over and engine died but I could restart it....

You may need a new fuel filter. When you start the engine all the particles in the filter begin to dam up until they choke off the fuel entirely. When the engine dies the particles fall back down allowing enough fuel flow to start the engine and the whole pocess repeats itself. Thanks, Dana

Lawn mower chugging

better late than never, I have the same mower

there is no throttle control on these mowers, if you look under the air filter the throttle is balanced by a spring pulling in one direction and a lever controlled by engine speed. if the spring breaks or falls off the lever will wiggle back and forth, more gas if the engine slows, less if it speeds up. you end up going fast/slow/fast/slow etc.

The tension spring slows the switching down and smooths out the engine speed.

Starts on choke but dies when moved off choke

If it will start on choke and die when choke is taken off...the carb needs to be taken off and cleaned. The main jet in the carb is probably clogged.

Motor died when I slowed down, and wouldn't crank again

Some motors have limit switches built in to kill the ignition if the motor is started at odd angles. The trim is different for speed and passenger load. The limit switches may be adjustable to eliminate that problem. Usually when you go to dock the boat will fish tail if the trim is too extreme for slow speeds.
