Have u tried this hard drive on another computer, the drive may be defective, that is the most common reason, also have u tied more than one USB port, ports go to sleep, so try one that is hooked up and u know is active, if that still doesn't work and the computer doesn't see the drive the drive is the problem

U can send it off to a data recovery service, but it is expensive, do a google for failed hard drive data recovery services.

Hi,

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

How to solve simple tech 160GB EXTERNAL USB HARD DRIVE

I was having a problem on Windows 7 with the SimpleTech 160GB drive not being recognized, went to the SimpleTech site and could not find any drivers - Went to MajorGeeks and found a driver update program - watch when you install it, do custom install so as not to get new homepage or toolbar. But it scanned and found where my drivers were deficient. Updated driver and drive is now recognized

When I plug my HD in, the blue light comes on, but the motor isnt running.

Have you plugged in the AC power adapter? The blue light means it is connected to the computer but USB power is not enough to operate this drive.

RAM PROBLEM ON INSPIRON N4010

Go into your BIOS and set it back to factory default. After you do that look at the page that lists your memory and see if both 2GB memory sticks are recognized. If one of them still isn't being recognized. You'll have to physically go inside of the computer and look at your memory slots to see how much memory is in each slot. Its possible you might not see both 2 GB memory sticks. If you do see both then one of them might be bad and you would need to talk to that tech shop to get it replaced.

I have a new pc and the simple tech external hard drive will not show up even though the red and blue lights come on.

click start > right click on computer(or my computer) and click manage click on disk management and see if the 160gb drive is shown, if it is right click on it and click mark partition as active , if windows does not find a new disk then right click on the drive again and click change drive letter and paths. Choose a drive letter and click ok and your drive should now appear in windows. If it isnt showing in disk management then check that the drive is not beeping ,if it is then it is receiving insufficient power from the usb port try removing other usb devices to see if it will function correctly, once you remove the other usb devices you will need to unplug and reinsert the usb lead of the hard drive

My PC does not recognize the external drive 96300-40001-001

Driver Problem:

Check whether any other PC or operating system does or not.
If recognized insert the installation disc and reinstall the drivers for ur drive on your PC.
If not recognized again try the aabove installation.
If this fails, contact service centre or drive manufacturer's tech support.

Simpletech hard drive not working

I have that problem similiar to yours. My simple tech stopped working for like two years so i decided to open up my simple tech and removed my HD away from the old enclosure so I can try building my own external hard drive for the first time. I bought another new 3.5 enclosure, IDE/ATA for the old HD. I put it in the new enclosure and it worked!

It's the only solution you can have. No need to retrieve data or re-format your HD. You can leave it the way you like...if you wanna reformat it...up to you.

Not being recognized now

It wasn't a malfunction of the simple tech unit, the problem was with the computer itself. I finally re booted the computer and the problem resolved itself. Thank you for being there and I learned a bit out of the experience (I am new to mac's)

Blinking lights and not recognized by computer

Try to remove the internal drive from enclosure and connect directly to PC. Does it show up this way?
Does it make any new clicking/knocking/whirring/grinding sounds like any of these: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php ?

Drive Being Recognized as Removable Disk

Same issue with my 500 GB TFD500U16. A little more description is that my PC is detecting the power when turning on the drive and the HDD itself is spinning up. Also the Blue light that normally indicates HDD activity by turning Red no longer shows activity but just stays Blue. This indicates that the data side of the HDD is not seated properly. Since mine is out of Warranty, I took it apart and found this to be the exact case.
! ! ! ! Please perform this at your own risk ! ! ! ! Especially if your warranty is still in effect! ! ! By loosening the HDD mounting screws inside that will allow the connection to seat properly and data to be seen.
