Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

My Rheem Ruud 25M01A water heater flame goes out before the thermostat is satisfied. The igniter goes into a ignition sequence from here on trying to get the flame to ignite for ever. If i turn the unit off for a few seconds and then back on the igniter continues its on/off dance. If I keep the unit shut off for about 10 minutes it starts up as it should, runs for a while end stops premature. I have replaced the flame rod, it did not change anything, but I noticed that after the flame starts up it goes full flame, nice and blue then after about two minutes the flame goes smaller to about half the normal size and its color turns to orange/yellow for a minute before the flame shuts off. I had a service man in here right from the start but he walked away stating that he would be back after he got some more information from whoever he was going to get it. That's four days ago now.... In the mean time I have been trying to get some warm water back in the house. Please could you give me some help with this? Thank you. joe_van_rooyen@hotmail.com

Check the air lines going to air pressure switch for cracks or splits. I know that will affect the gas valve but not sure if that is your problem.

Have you checked the combustion air openings to make sure they are not blocked? Also, I've been to the rheem website trying to find you model and can't get anything. Do you have a schematic you could send me?

Some models have a separate flame sensor and some use the ignitor to sense the flame...

If it has a separate sensor then clean it with a soft cloth... if it is the ignitor then the ignitor is bad...

Water heater not firing up

Make sure thermostat is turned to 120 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Turn the thermostat down and back up to see if it ignites. If it lights put the cover back on and set it to temp you want it to be. if not, you have a bad thermostat.
Hope this helps.

Rheem powervent ignites then goes out, electronic ignition.

Sounds like a bad thermocouple. This part sends a millivolt signal to keep the gas valve open but shuts it off when it cools - or if something goes wrong with the ignighter - to prevent fires. It's easy to replace and not super expensive. See your local Rheem dealer.
