Question about Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera

XTi 400D flash

I've had my XTi for about a year and a few weeks ago the flash popped up and when I pushed it down to lock it, it popped back up again and now it won't lock down. Any suggestions?

It appears that the small hook that holds the flash down is not latching properly and perhaps needs replacement. If your camera is still under warranty, call Canon Customer care. Even if the warranty has just expired (like 1 or 2 months), they generally honor it and get the service done free of cost.

there is a sensor under the lip of the hot-shoe, you need a very small screw driver to lift up the piece that pushes down on the tiny button that tells the camera that there is already a flash mounted. this was caused by leaving the external flash on too long. try it, good luck. the sensor button is tiny., may need magnifying glass.

My camera rebel xti flash will not work all of a sudden, what could be the problem and how may I fix it?

Does the flash pop up when you try to take a picture in low light in the Green Box Mode? If the flash does not pop up the problem may just be that something sticky is keeping it down. If it pops up but does not fire, the problem is usually either a bad flash tube or the wiring to the flash has broken where the flash head pivots up and down.
When the flash is fully charged the capacitor retains a voltage of over 300 volts even when the camera is turned off and the battery is removed. I've seen several cameras where the owner tried to repair the flash and ended up burning out the entire Main PC Board.

How do you get to the video mode on the canon 400d rebel xti

There is no video mode on the Xti. The first Canon Digital Rebel to be equipped with video was the T1i, which came out almost 5 years later (2 years ago).

Flash will automatically pop out only in AUTO mode, if the camera needs some additional lightning. In manual modes, you should use the flash button located at the left down side of the flash compartment, to manually force the flash to pop up

Hi Chrissy, I had observed the same problem - after an external flash had been removed from the camera, internal flash didn't pop up. Tried to look at the Google and finally found the solution. It helped me and could help you as well:
The usual reason is that the camera thinks that there's an external flash mounted on the hot shoe. Check the external flash detect switch. It's located under the right side of the shoe (there is a metalic piece which is kind of "elastic". Just try to push it and release several times, may be put the screwdriver softly under it and out... It helped me. Here is the picture of location of the detector.

Built-in flash does not work

DO NOT MESS with a new camera (or any other new equipment).
Take/send it back to the vendor, The purchaser has rights also. Number one it must work.
I don't know your location but in UK (& Europe) we have very strict consumer legislation.

I made the mistake of putting ahotshoe protector from my old camera on the new EOS 400D. It stopped the flash from popping up. I took it off and things now work.

Flash doesn't work

I found the answer and fixed my flash. Look on http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00ODWf

This will describe how, if you have been using a speedlite alot, than the little tab under the shutter release side of the hot shoe can get bent down thus constantly pressing down (toward the bottom of the camera) the small button which deactivates the pop-up1.gif flash even when the speedlite is not attached. Just bend the tab up a little with a jewler's screwdriver, turn the camera off and on and voila!! Fixed!!! Dan describes pushing the tab down, but on the xti, the tab needs to be bent up to release the flash deactivation switch and fix the problem. Thanks to Dan D on photonet for saving me a service call.
