The error code tells me the computer is not phisically connected to the device. Either the cable is bad, it is not connected in the right places or the port it is plugged into is bad. Try the device on a friends PC to confirm it still works. Then just rule out the unit, and cable. Lastly try plugging something else into the port and see if the PC likes that device. *mark*

Try using a different Vista disc. The one that comes with the computer is set up to use very specific hardware. If you can get a different Vista Home Disc you should be okay. You may have to call Microsoft to activate it. But the call is free and usually automated. You can legally use a different disc as long as you use the Microsoft code on the label on the computer.

My AWA UC550AR Micro System does not recognise when a CD is loaded

The problem is in the laser pickup, overtime it becomes weak until it can no longer read the disc, the only option is the complete replacement of the laser pickup assembly, but it is far cheaper to replace the player.

Look in the installation manual for settings on the player (enabled as a CD installer) and on your pc. You need a type of software called a driver on your computer so it understands what hardware is plugged into it.

When i put a dvd in my hitachi htdk185uk it says unknown disc what does this mean

Either a DVD with the wrong region code has been loaded, and your player doesn't recognise it, or you have inserted a disc which is either rewritable (or an incompatible format for your player), a blank DVD or CD, or the disc has not been finalised in a DVD recorder. It depends on the disc(s) you have, whether they are region coded or those using a compatible playback format (finalised DVD-Rs are the best as far as burned copies go).

Examples of incompatible formats for your player may include;
DVD-ROMs
DVD-RAMs (which are the wrong version/speed for your unit)
Mini-DVDs/CDs
CD-RWs
DVDs with a different region code to your player or rewritable discs

* When using shop-bought DVDs, including those purchased online, make sure their region code matches your player.

My tv dvd combi 21pt6820/05

These units use a belt for the loading mechanism. If the belt slips at all, the loading will not complete and lock. This will prevent the unit from reading the disc. Try loading a music CD. If hte CD plays ok, then the optics assembly is in need of at least a cleaning or replacement.
