Question about Flat Panel Televisions

Vizio 50" Plasma Does not power up

I have a 50" Vizio Plasma P50HDM. What started with a loud "popping" sound and the screen going blank has further degenerated into first losing sound as well, then the TV shutting itself off after about 10-20 seconds, into finally not powering up at all.

I called Vizio and they transferred me to an outfit called "Repair Solutions" who service out of warranty Vizio products. They want a hefty $850 to fix the TV on-site. I wonder what parts are required to replace, wether I can order them and fix the TV myself? I am handy and although I have no experience with electronics, I could pull out and replace whole assemblies if that's what it takes.

Thanks for the feedback. I called the 800# you provided and they gave me a quote for the power supply board ($252.94) and an additional "core" charge of $99.75) What is that? Also they claim that there is no such thing as a "system control board". Could this go by a different name?

  • vkapur2001 Mar 29, 2008

They still don't get video board... Customer service wants an exact decription of the part. I went on their website and downloaded an isometric layout of the vizio 50" panel case assembly. Are you eluding to something called the PDP MAIN BD ***'Y, part # 3850-0022-0150. If you go to vancebaldwin.com and put a search for "p50hdm" it will generate 2 pdf's one of the drawing and the other of the entire parts list. The power supply is listed as " 3501Q00158A POWER SUPPLY BOARD". Please confirm the part #'s before I order them.. Thanks

    Vizio Plasma P50HDM

I have a 50" Vizio Plasma P50HDM. What started with a loud "popping" sound and the screen going blank has further degenerated into first losing sound as well, then the TV shutting itself off after about 10-20 seconds, into finally not powering up at all unless the TV is shut down for a few hours. Then the TV powers up but I get only sound no picture.

I was told by the first expert to replace the power supply board and the system control board. I called Vance Baldwin (Vizio spare parts supplier) but they claim there is no such thing called a "system control board". Am I going in the right direction? What's the fix?

  • vkapur2001 Mar 31, 2008

I dont think you read my post carefully. Your solution is a cut/paste of the previous solution offered by the first expert. There is no such thing called a system control board or video board for the Vizio p50hdm model. I am trying to get the right name of the part os I can order it. It appears to me that s4u311 and ib4g2008 are the one and same expert.

Please provide me with an answer that takes care of the problem onece and for all. I feel like I'm going round in circles and can't get a straight answer from the experts. Please read my entire post and previous solutions offered before sending me the response...

Ginko... thanks for your solution. It is very helpful.. One more thing.. I'm handy with tools but have no experience in electronics. How do I test the boards prior to ordering. Is there any special equipment to test once I power off the unit?

Dear Vkapur,
The loud "popping" sound you heard was something blowing inside your tv because of a short. After this the tv started 'TV shutting itself off after about 10-20 seconds' because of safety switch inside the tv. Each time you restarted the tv you were probably worsening the initial problem.
The initial pop may had been caused by a faulty PSU, you need to test the power unit inside the tv to know if is ok. However, it is possible that the PSU is fine and just some other part have blown.
When some other expert talked about system main board was evidently referring to the main board inside the tv, which technical name is DTV board. This is the board where you hook all other components inside the TV.
Your engineer should start testing the DTV board, eventually replacing it, and then testing and replacing the power board if there is need to.
The whole job done should cost between $300 and $500.
You can also get more information by contacting Dale Reich or visiting her forum, she also supply parts and part numbers for your TV.

Regards

I have just seen on the forum Dale may have the replacement board for your 50'' pn #3850-0022-0150 (check with dale that nr. is correct one). Ask the price by email and compare with vancebaldwin, which also has competitive prices.

Sorry I did not read your later post, yes your main board is 3850-0022-0150, you will need to tester this first and replace it. Power board 3501Q00158A may also have been involved in the problem (may have been the starting cause) test it and eventually replace it, or have it replaced from service.
Naturally, as usual, disconnect power from your device while servicing (leave it disconnected for a while before servicing), and If you are not enough experienced in servicing this kind of device, call a service.
I think this should resume the solution for your whole problem.

    Best regards

There are two items in there..power supply board and system control board..I recommend replacing them both.

there's a group, called WACA that handles this, that might be able to sell you those parts..let me get their information.
service Vizio here on HI, and this takes around 1.4 hours to do...not too bad..and only simple tools..just need to be careful laying it down on flat soft surface to do work.

sure..video board..it's the main board that controls the video drive..has all the interface connect
the core charge is something based on having to recycle the components on the power supply board.

you may find it less expensive, but it may be of uncertain lineage, so to speak, elsewhere.

I have a Vizio p50hdm while watching heard a pop noise and tv went out cant turn back on.I replaced main board and power board and still doesn't come on any Ideas?

The power amplifier chip (which goes "pop" when it goes bad) may be located on the board where the IR sensor is. Sometimes (but not always) you can make the TV come on by holding the power button in _until_ the TV comes on. But that usually only works when the chip is "going" bad. If you heard the pop, it's probably shot. Also, check for a fuse on _any_ of the boards, and possibly a main fuse at the back of the TV.

Check and replace damaged component/s at it main power regulator [SMPS] section circuit. Contact any service technician. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Viewing it in "Mosaic" or "Magazine" will make surf easy. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. Do asearch by type in the brand name of your device at its search box.

It will be best to replace the power supply regulator board as card basis.

Picture went out on p50hdm Vizio Plazma tv after loud POP

It's either the backlight lamp or backlight inverter is busted due to a power failure or fluctuation. Here's how to determine which is which:
  1. Grab a flashlight.
  2. Turn on the TV.
  3. Shine the flashlight onto the screen.
  4. If you cannot see any display even a faint one, the backlight inverter is dead, else the backlight lamps are busted.
  5. Replace which ever is the culprit.

replace the sustainer boards should correct this problem. New sustainer boards may cause red and green pixilation. If this happen, replace control board and TV is as good as new.

That problem is the Ysus board, Sometimes people will replace the Zboard at the same time. If you bought it at costco a couple of years ago you are in luck costco will refund your purchase price, costco has changed the return policy and newer tv's are not refunded, but something to look into
