Re: New Maps - Can't update unit
The new maps will be unlocked to your GPS using the code Garmin supplied you.
You will have to add these maps to a second SD card if your present card is full, or else purchase a larger card. Since all the Mapsource NT 2008 Europe maps are 1,395MB in size, you'll need to purchase at least a 2GB SD card.
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

The Street Pilot line was one of the first automotive GPS devices from Garmin, and has got to be 8+ years old. Garmin contracts with Navteq for map software. At one point, Garmin needed to have Navteq compress their new maps so that they wouldn't need to increase the amount of memory in the GPS units and still be able to include all the way points, and new features such as junction view, traffic receivers, text to speech voices, etc. These new maps have an "NT" descriptor in the title. "NT "stands for "New Technology". Non-NT maps are no longer produced.
The new Garmin GPS hardware had to included the ability to decompress maps "on the fly" for display on the screen. As a result, the NT maps will not work in the older Garmin devices.
Your best bet is to either use the Street Pilot - knowing that the routes may no longer provide accurate information, or purchase a New, Refurbished or Used GPS. Garmin offers "Lifetime Maps" as an option for nearly all NT capable GPS units either as a subscription after GPS purchase, or "in the box" when buying a Garmin GPS. You'll get FREE map updates for that GPS up to 4 times per year. This assures you of always having the most recent maps available in your GPS. Look for a model that has "LM" in it (ie: nuvi 1490LM). If it has a "T" in the model name (ie: nuvi 1490T), it has Lifetime Traffic. If it is listed as "LMT" (nuvi 1490LMT) it has both Lifetime Maps and Lifetime Traffic.
Create an account at myGarmin regsiter your unit ID number this will allow you to unlock the maps that you buy. You then have two options the first requires you to have an NT 2009 or 2008 map already installed.
nüMaps Lifetime™This will cost you £99.99 and is a on off payment Remember — this map update can only be used to update the preloaded
maps that came installed on your Garmin GPS device. For example, a
Garmin GPS device preloaded with North America maps only cannot be
updated with a nüMaps Lifetime Europe Map Update, and vice versa. Check product compatibility.
nüMaps Onetime™ This will cost you £79.99 and does not rely on having a map already installed. The City Navigator® Europe NT comes on a DVD or you can download it.

Here's a thought: instead of trying to install pirated maps which don't/won't work on your unit, how about actually buying the maps which are guaranteed to work. You will get a free copy of Mapsource on the disk with the maps of Europe.
You can get City Navigator 2008 CD from your local Garmin dealer. Cost around $100. It updates via MapSource program and USB connection to IQue 3600. Do not get "NT" maps as 3600 does not understand "NT" compression
You will need to purchase Mapsource NT 2008 to get the latest maps. The upgrade will come with a serial number which you will use to register on garmin's website. You will also need your unit ID, it can be found on the back of your unit, when you register with Garmin. Afterward you will get your unlock code (25 characters). You will enter the unlock code in Mapsource before installing the maps onto your Garmin.
Hi check out this wed site, it will help. HT maps for the Nuvi are NOT for PC use. The map load onto the GPS as you install Mapsouce. Reinstall Mapsouce and take option 3 on the startup page of the program.
You cannot replace American maps with European maps. Garmin does this in order to protect the European retailers. The European SD card eliminates the need to load the maps into the 660, however, if you need to use the card slot to store extra data such as MP3s then you might be better off buying the 670.
