There is a switch on the top of the laptop that "detects" whether or not the laptop is open. This effectively shuts off the screen when the laptop is closed. Look for a "bump" on the screen face that corresponds to a depression in the laptop. This should be the "switch" mechanism. If the actual switch in the laptop body is stuck, you could see the symptom you describe.
