Question about Dirt Devil Vision Turbo W/Bonus Upright Vacuum Vacuum

1 Answer

I have a Dirt Devil Vision self-propelled vacuum cleaner. Recently, the self-propelled feature is stuck in the backward mode, so it only goes backwards! I can get it to go forward if I push really hard (i guess it is good for a workout!). I try to turn off the propel feature completely, but it will not turn off. please help!

    Hello Pauldonp,
    thank you for your help!
I e-mailed dirt devil, and since it is no longer under warranty, they referred me to a local dealer for service.
In the meantime, could I ask you if there is an easy way for me to disengage the self-propel feature, or is that something only the repair center can do?
    thank you!

Hi, the problem you are having is going to be with the switch that controls the forwards and backwards settings so with this stuck in backwards their is no way you can get this turned off, the other problem is your not going to be able to replace this yourself as you cant get the parts, the only real option you have would be to find your nearest repair shop and get the switch replaces, usually one of your local hardware stores will be a repair outlet for your make of cleaner, or you could contact dirt devil via their web site and they would then tell you their nearest place to you for repair.

Now depending on how long you have had it would depend on whether your going to be charged for the repair, so check if you have any warranty left on it as this part would be covered by warranty, also this problem is known to dirt devil so they may repair it for free anyway, so your first option would be to contact them first and see what they come up with, if after doing this you dont want to pay for repair then you could get a local repair shop to remove this function from your cleaner by disengaging the self propelled motor so that it is just a normal vac, how ever this would be giving up and you would only be left with a normal vac.
the cost of repair would not be much so thats the way i would go.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

hi, sorry its been a while but i been away working and away from my computer, you would not be able to dissengage the drive yourself as you need special tools to remove the covers to get to the drive motor, if you have these tools then you could try removing the casing on the bottom of the back it should only be held on by normal screws but once this is off you would need to check what type of screwdriver you need to remove the casing to the drive motor, but once you have the casing off make sure you know where everything goes such as the brush and belt as it will come out in pieces, now im not 100% sure if the drive is belt or cogs if you locate the drive and its belt then all you need to do is remove the belt from the drive wheels pulley but leave the belt for the brushes, this should then dissengage the drive and allow you to use it as normal vac, how ever if its cogs then this would mean you needing to remove the motor and all the electrics and you may also have to bypass the motors electrics to ensure the vac will work, so if it is cogs then i would leave it to a pro as getting it wrong could make matters alot worse.

let me know how you get on ok and once again really sorry for the delay

Four screws hold the bottom plate in place. Turn the vac upside down and remove the screws that hold the cover(bottom plate) over the brush roll in place. Remove the plate and you are there.
