Question about Amana ABB192ZDES Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

2 Answers

Hi. The control board on my Amana 102ZDES needed replacement. I had a new board installed, and now it just lights up, registering a 0 for fridge and a 0 for freezer. The temperature control (arrows) do not change the numbers and the unit will not turn on. Does it sound like they sent me a bad board? Or could it be another problem?

I called Amana. They don't provide technical support, believe it or not. I called the numbers which you sent, but the operator said that all the Tech Support people were laid off. I was transferred to Customer Service which does not have any specific product information. Doesn't look like there is anybody who can walk us through a trouble shooting. Still kind of lost. I'll try to figure out something from these manuals, but I am a lay person and it is complicated.

Ah! PS. Diagram of the control board in the manual which you copied to me is different from the way our control board looks. We don't have all those buttons. Will this procedure work?

    Hi There...
I have an Amana ABB192ZDES bottom freezer unit, which is in Brazil. It died and we were told to replace the control board. We did so, but the fridge still won't turn on. The numbers all stay at ZERO and the arrow switches won't turn it on and off. I tried calling AMANA, they don't offer any technical support to their products any more. Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Aaron

Are Amana and Maytag the same company? I called Amana's headquarters in Iowa, they informed me that in fact NO, THERE IS NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT> They told me to call an authorized repair person (there are none where I am located, in Brazil), which is why I resorted to FIXya for help. I tried the phone numbers you provided too. The toll free number is disconnected and the other number is where they told me there is no technical support. I am desparate. I don't want to junk a 1000.00 dollar refrigerator because I can't get a simple question answered. The manual you attatched does not appear to be for the same kind of unit

  • rudneraaron May 07, 2010

Thanks anyway. Seems you don't understand my question. The buttons don't work. The instructions you sent say to use the button panel which does not respond.

    Hi Phil,

That was really helpful! I still can't believe Amana doesn't have a tech support available to customers. I did (FYI) find one number which is made available to technicians. It is 800-832-7174. I will try that on Monday.

Meanwhile, I went through the steps to enter the code for the new control board. Unfortunately this didn't work, so I guess either the board is no good or it wasn't put in right in the first place (which I think is unlikely).

You're supposed to open the door, hold the door switch down with one hand and click on the freezer's minus sign 3 times, then let the door switch go. This should put the unit in program mode and change the display to P E but it stays at 0 0 and won't budge.

    Any thoughts on this!?

    Aaron

Did they program the board with the code on the refrigerator tag when it was installed? It sounds like it is missing the code

    Hi again,

I did not realize you have a list of help here, I have access to some Amana information I will do a bit of research here and get right back to you

  • Philip May 08, 2010

Your programming code is in one of these 2 manuals. The control once replaced has to be programmed for your refrigerator. The instructions in one of these manuals will be for your control.

Let me know if this helps.

    Hi Aaron,

From the sound of what you have tried it does sound like a defective control board.

Pretty much all the manufactures today do not have technical assistance to customers, they only have assistance to service companies. I am sure there are many reasons for this, but is sure does hurt the do-it-yourself repair person.

Let me know if I can help further.

One bad installation send erratic information, or bad board (I'm assuming that even you have warraty).

For Amana/Maytag models, check this Technical Service Bulletin

Check this manual (page 37 and next). Also, with the exactly model (all letters) its possible that you can find other literature HERE.

Good luck

    In
response it has obtained the representative where you purchased in
control panel, I suggest to send an email to tech support asking for
    explanations of the case.
    It seems
inconceivable that a company offering products of a brand and not keep
tech support in case of questions. The email is in my first post.

    To turn
    cooling control On/Off

The On/Off control turns off cooling for both compartments
and turns off the dispenser. The cooling control does not disconnect the power to the
    refrigerator.

    Depending on your
model, you may have a control center with
an On/Off button, or you may have a control
    center without an On/Off button.

    • For units with the
On/Off button, press and hold it for 3 seconds. The
red LED will light up to indicate that cooling is off. Press
the On/Off button again to turn on the cooling.
      The LED will turn off.

    • If your refrigerator
does not have an On/Off button, press the Freezer (+) pad until Off
appears in the display. Neither compartment will
cool. Press the Freezer or Refrigerator (-) pad to
      turn the cooling back on.

    To adjust
    set point temperatures

    Press the (+) or (-)
touch pads until the desired temperature set point is displayed.

To fix up a frosted up vents, I had a control board replaced for $180. Then 6 months later, the bottom freezer frost up AGAIN. rather than dumping more money to fix it, I was about to buy a new fridge, but had a crazy idea: I disconnected the water to the freezer, bought plastic trays for ice cubes for $3 at walmart. Fridge has worked like a charm for 6 months. no signs of frost. Saved $1000's.

Fridge and freezer stopped working.Power still on (light on in fridge). Digital control for fridge and freezer shows straight line no numbers. Any suggestions?

The double dashes in your display are for one of two reasons. First situation would be would be "you turned the unit off". Press the up arrow on the feezer or fresh food control until a 4 is in each display. Second, if the control is locked out, the board has been scrambled or failed possibly from a power surge. Unplug unit for 30 seconds, and plug it back in and try to set control's for "4". If controls are still locked out, the board (12868513) needs to be replaced.

My fridge is working constantly it stops only when i select zero at the thermostat switch

Sounds like the cold control is bad.Does the fridge work ok otherwise? The cold control is what you are having to turn to 0,and are usually set at midrange.0 to 9,set at 4.The control has a temperature sensitive tube that opens or closes the contacts in the control, and they do go bad. This is where I would start. You can get a replacement control at an appliance shop.Get the model and seriel number of the fridge located usually inside of fridge on a tag on the inside wall.Use these numbers to get the part.Hope this helps. Defrost cycle is not working on Amana model BX21Te

had similar problem with a ge fridge. remove the back panel if you can and clean out the dust and dirt. this may help, if not, your fridge may need a part such as a component board that controls the defrost cycle. that's what i had to do with my ge, it cost about $150 but i had some other work done as well. it sucks but it's a lot cheaper than a new fridge. good luck.

Warm fridge

If this Amana has digital display at top in fridge more than likely the Jazzboard (control board) has failed. Check for votage at fan if you don't get any or some times if you do the Jazzboard can still have issues controling the evap.fan. I've found the Jazz board to go bad some times. Hit me back let me know. Jazz board is in the control box were the digital numbers light up.
