Hello,

The only computer (or laptop) connection that carries both video and sound is HDMI. If you do not have a HDMI/DVI connector on the back of your computer, then you will have to use the VGA-composite or s-video connectors to display your PC's output on an external monitor like an LCD TV.

On both my HP and Dell laptops the display settings (Start/Control Panel/Personalize/Display Settings) allow two modes - single or dual monitor mode. Single monitor mode allows me to switch between any one of three possible video outputs - VGA-composite, S-Video or laptop screen, or a split-desktop (display spread over two separate monitors). Dual monitor mode allows the same display on any two of three possible video outputs.

Switching is performed using the fn keys on the keyboard (fn key plus the F2, F8, etc. function key with the display marking). You guys use single monitor mode until you figure out what your are doing. Select VGA-composite or S-Video.

Non-HDMI sound to your TV monitor or sound system must be obtained from your laptop's Headphone or S/PDIF jacks. Headphone is stereo and S/PDIF is 5.1 surround sound. Headphone is electrical, but S/PDIF may be electrical or optical (laser light). You must set the sound jack that you intend to use as the default on the PC control panel (Start/Control Panel/Sound).

None of these connectors is two-way in the context of an LCD monitor - your PC cannot record a TV picture or sound from the external monitor. To accomplish this you must purchase a video converter box that converts cable TV or video + sound inputs to USB format usable by your laptop. Do this and you can turn your laptop into a Tivo recorder/DVD burner using Beyond TV, Sage TV or a variety of other software packages.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.
Thanks.

I have an Acer aspire m3200. I tried to connect it to my hdtv, i got picture but no sound using the VGA cord, and got nothing using the HDMI cord. Please help

Hello,
Using a vga cable to connect your laptop to a hdtv is very easy but the cable does not transfer the audio signal, you need another cable aswell. You need a 3.5mm jack to jack cable, one end plugs into your headphone socket on your laptop and the other end plugs into the pc audio socket at the back of your tv (usually next to where you plug in the vga plug).

How can i connect my advent qrc430 to a hd television

There are two options available with this laptop. Unfortunatley you will not be able to produce a High Definition picture, but nether the less it is possible to connect it to a HD TV.
The connections available are;
1x VGA - You will need a VGA Cable (as long as your HD TV has a VGA/PC input) cheapest found on Ebay. There is also a VGA to HDMI cable. Still wont be HD but an alternative to think about.

1x S-Video (TV-Out) - You will need a S-Video Cable (make sure HD TV has this input) also cheapest on Ebay.

Both of these options do not produce audio through them so for this you will need a 3.5mm audio jack to 3.5mm audio jack. Plug one end into your earphone socket on your laptop and the other end into your HD TV PC Audio in socket/Audio in socket. If you have a Cinema/surround system you will need a 3.5mm audio jack to stereo phono, as long as the surround system has an audio input.

Problem with tv and computer. No sound.

If you plug in headphones to the Laptop can you hear anything? If not check laptop settings
If you plug an ipod (or similar) into the TV using the same lead can you hear anything? What about with a different lead?

The method is to take "known good" parts and swap them into the system to find the failure point by replacing each part in turn until you confirm it is "known good" or faulty.

I suspect the lead but follow the procedure above.

I cannot get my PC sound to play through my Samsung LE32457A HDTV

I hope 3.5mm to twin phono would have plugged in headphone jack of PC to get sound for TV, right?
Reduce PC volume level up to zero and increase it very little bit to get sound in TV.
TV is getting excessive sound level from headphone jack and causing mute circuit to activate to avoid any internal damage.

UMC 19in TV with built-in DVD player - model L19/7TCD

Try connecting earphones or headphones to the 3.5mm Headphone socket on the TV and check this works correctly, i.e hear TV when watching TV, hear DVD when watching a DVD etc.
If all is OK, purchase a 3.5mm Jack to L/R Audio/Phono cable. Connect the 3.5mm jack in to the headphone socket on the TV and connect the red/white phone ends to the 5.1 surround system.
It should solve it. SCART out is not always live in all sources so is not a reliable way to connect.

I wanna hook my laptop to my tv. used a vga cable and get picture but no sound

You also need an audio cable to go along with the VGA cable. You will need a 3.5mm audio jack cable. Plug one side into the headphone jack of your laptop, the other side into the 3.5mm audio jack that is right beside the VGA connector.

Connecting laptop audio to tv

i had the same issue with a thinkpad T61 which i was connecting using VGA and a audio jack going straqight from the headphone socket to the back of tv.
I had picture but no sound and i found that once connected the issue could be solved by rotating the projection setting on the laptop(Fn+F7). Basically switched back to laptop only display, then back to laptop and projector display again and teh sound just kicked in.
i think it's related to the projector setting on the laptop rather than an issue with the tv.
