Question about Computers & Internet

Satellite Pro "Locks up"

Computer: I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro A120, Model no. PSACIE-04R00VEN. I'm running Windows XP Professional, Version 2002 servic pack2.

Problem: Occaisionally the whole computer "locks up" - the screen freezes and all input items (mouse, keyboard etc) fail to work. All I can do is hold the power key down to shut it down and then reboot.
The problem may happen upto 3 times in a day, but then does not repeat itself for 1,2,3 weeks. Very random.
The only thing that I have noticed, is that it seems to happen when I have 3-4 web browsing windows open, although I'm not sure if this has any significance.

Any Ideas?

The first step would be to obtain a memory checking program to check the ram,
windows can help with that free,as i think it may be your problem.

Windows xp professional took 3 hours to install with 1.5 gb ram on toshiba Pro A120 , WHEN i CLICK on any screen it behaves like curtain display

Xp should have taken you less than 1 hour, takes me about 30 mins.
If it took you that long, your Hard drive may be faulty.

My comp crushed the windows xp professional and on reinstalling the recovery version on the toshiba SATELLITE L3000 the sound device was not there.

YOu need to locate your devices TRUE model. Look on your product label on bottom of laptop. There are various models of the L3000 series. Once you have the proper model number (looks like L3000-502I etc) Go to website. Go to DOWNLOADS tab, choose LAPTOP in first box, Choose SATELLITE on next one, and in third box scroll to your actual model number (the real one) and then download the SOUND drivers for your device. This should fix it. Also, you need to be sure and download teh proper version for Windows XP.. dont get the Windows 7 version. I would also make sure that XP is updated to the current SP3 version. To do this go to and run Microsoft Update.

Toshiba a120 bios password

It cannot be removed using software.

To remove the password you will have to remove the CMOS battery located on the lower side of the motherboard.

To access the battery the computer must be disassembled completely.

Hello there. You need to install the driver from

As a side note, Redhat AS is not really a great choice for beginners to linux, you may find Ubuntu or another new user orientated Distribution, makes a better attempt at hardware detection.

Hope this helps.
