Getting intermittent breakdown in connection in all surround sound modes. Both DVD and satelite TV decoder audio connection is through coaxial. There are times that it works perfectly for days. On Dolby it start sounding like the voices are brubling, and on the digital to analogue modes, it gives a sort of a bgggggggg sound. Switching the amp off and on again, its perfect again. I checked all connections. Thought it may be a loose connection inside the amp?

Re: Harman Kardon AVR 7000
This is most likely a problem with the processing chip/system. It could be as simple as a bad connection at the chips or the chips are having problems internally. This is not a problem that is likely to be fixed without bench time and test equipment. You're going to need to get this unit to a service shop for proper diagnosis.

This is clearly a manufacture defect right off the assembly line. From your description you have a serious intermittent problem with the AVR unit when it comes to selection and other choices and it will only get worse, I strongly suggest you return the item in favor of another.

"You may have observed that the HK 3485 is not equipped with digital audio inputs or surround sound decoding. If you prefer the complete home theater experience, you may wish to consider purchasing a fullfeatured Harman Kardon AVR Series audio/video receiver. However, we hope you will find that using a DVD player with the HK 3485 in smaller settings, such as a bedroom or den, surpasses the audio performance of most televisions, including those with onboard stereo speakers."
connect tv video in to kardon video out (tv audio in to kardon audio out) dvd audio and video out to kardio audio video in. and if you what to record also signal from tv. make a cable from tv audio / video out to kardon audio / video in.
Incorrect polarity between receiver and speaker will not damage receiver however unmatched impedance speakers can damage amplifier section of receiver. Please check connection cables in receiver and if receiver does not shut off in protection mode then it could be connection cable broken or some dry / cold solder joints on circuit boards in receiver. Re-soldering of cold solder joints is job of qualified tech.
I believe he avr-5 has 6 channel inputs, what you will need is a dolby digital 5.1 and DTS outboard surround sound processor, say an item as the Technics SH-AC500 decoder, a Harman Kardon Signature 2.1 DTS version outboard processor/preamp, and many others on the market by different manufactors, Run the discrete audio outputs from the Processor into the AVR 5`s 6 channel inputs, select 6 channel input or DVD inputs on the receivers selector and your good to go. Be sure you are playing Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS encoded material.
Harman kardon amplifire are known for that.specially AVR 7000
but sometimes this comes from poor wiring and using a wire that will not conduct better sound. Remember your wiring is very important.you may think your wiring is currect, better to double check. even if your connection is ok and the wire you are using are not better to produce quality sound you will not get sound from every speaker.
