If only it was that simple. That was the first thing I looked at. The interior lights are out in the freezer and the fridge!

I have a Kitchenaid Superba side by side refrigerator. I took out the ice maker, which is not working and now the interior lights are out and the fridge is still running. It is not something as simple as bad switches; I already checked that.

It doesn't make sense to me that the bulbs in the freezer and the fridge burnt out at the same time. Is there anything in the ice maker that would effect the lights. The lights went out when I tried to remove the ice maker.

  • slay11 May 08, 2010

All the lights are out (freezer and fridge) including the indicator lights in the fridge showing the freezer/fridge temps. Also the water dispenser and the light in the door stopped working. All this happened when I tried to take the ice dispenser out (which hasn't been working). Is there a fuse or relay in the fridge that could have blown?

  • slay11 May 10, 2010

All the lights are out (freezer and refrigerator) There is also a compartment in the fresh food section that has lighted #'s showing such things freezer temp, fridge temp, # of hours left on the water filter; those lights are also out. Also the water dispenser on the door has stopped working. (this happened at the same time as the lights going out). The ice make hasn't worked for some time. When I tried to remove the ice maker is when the previously stated problems started.

  • slay11 May 10, 2010

Sorry! I forgot to give you the model #. KSCS23INSS01

  • slay11 May 10, 2010

There 2 bulbs in the freezer and 2 bulbs in the fresh food sections. It is unlikely that all the bulbs blew at the same time. When these lights went out, the water dispenser on the door stopped working at the same time.

  • slay11 May 18, 2010

Sorry it took me so long to get back! I never really did remove anything. As I was attempting to remove the ice maker the lights and the water dispenser stopped working. I took the ice maker out with out unplugging it and noticed that the black wire going into the ice maker was out. I plugged it back in but still had the same problems. When you said that I had to connect the white/tan wire to neutral in the system; can you explain that a little better. (just a home owner)

If all of the lights failed at the same time it would be most likely the door switch that has caused the problem.

It appears there are 2 bulbs in the freezer and 2 in the fresh food side, are all 4 out?

Can you send me the complete model number from the tag? It should be located on the right top front wall of the fresh food section.

Thanks, this will aid in tracing the wiring down.

  • Philip May 08, 2010

There is no fuse but there could be a harness connection that needs to be bypassed with the ice maker out. Can you send me the complete model number from the tag on the refrigerator, that way I can pull up the wiring diagram for this particular model and advise you what to do. Thanks!

  • Philip May 10, 2010

    Hi,

There is a common wire that connects to all these controls and lights you are having trouble with. It is the white/tan wire. I am guessing we need to connect that wire to neutral in the system. Do you still have the wiring from the parts you removed?

  • Philip May 10, 2010

What parts did you remove or unplug?

Yes, it sounds like it is time for new bulbs.

If the fridge is still functioning but lights are out it is a simple fix.

If you can write back and leave me the exact model number of your fridge I can direct you to which bulb you will need to purchase.

The door switch may not be opening all the way. It can get dirty and gummed up and not work. Try cleaning it and work it so that it comes out all the way. Will the lights come on when you pull it out all the way. If the switch is bad you can bypass the switch by touching the two wires together on the back of the switch and the light will come on.

You will need to trace the wire checking for voltage till a voltmeter shows voltage. Try tracing it using the colors of the wires from the door switch to a wiring harness. There's a wiring harness under the fridge near the compressor. Here's a diagram of your unit.1
    http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partse...

There's another wiring harness in the fridge. It's part 20 in the control diagram. The only thing common to the two lights might be the electronic control board. Part 6 in the control diagram.

Kitchenaid Superba Side by side, refrigerator side not cooling

Assuming that your fridge is set at max thermostat setting, and still it cools to 8 degrees only. It only mean
one thing, and that is have your refrigerant level check,
and have it loaded. E-mail to us your comments.

Fridge door is lower then freezer door

The #1 cause for this problem: The floor beneath the fridge is uneven, causing the refrigerator "box" to be out of square. Adjust the levelers on the fridge bottom to compensate for the uneven floor. That should do it.
