1 - Have you tried a different IDE cable?
If not give it a go and do a repair if needed again!

2 - You may have a corrupt MBR (master boot record)!! You will need to reformat and do Fdisk /mbr to delete the master boot record!! Save all data first as this will not allow you to access any of your data as all file location addresses are located in the MBR!!

3 - Your hard drive may have a bad sector get a zerofill tool(low level formatting tool)!! This will rewrite you HD's sectors putting them back to factory spec's!! Maxtors is called Maxblast you can get it from their site!!

4 - or it could be a defective drive, but most read errors are due to corrupt MBR or a bad sector!!

IT may be the problem of your vista.By working some files may get destroyed.May these files are using for further installation processes. There is another chance, The file missing may noticed @ the time of installation of vista. But badly most of us Skips that file. This is also a problem. If you know Formatting just do it only for C drive & install new OS.

Hi,

Bootmngr or the boot master is the first thing that the computer looks for when you turn on your pc. Since you mention that haven't finished formatting your computer, then the boot master wasn't properly installed that's why it is looking for it.

The only solution to your problem is to find another OS installation CD and start formatting again.

Maybe you can ask from a friend for the OS CD and this time make sure that the OS CD you use don't have scratches for you to finish it successfully.

Hope it helps.

Thanks!

New hdd with bootmgr missing while trying to install os

Are you sure you are booting from the CD? Does the CD light go on when you reboot? Watch the information on the screen when you reboot, you may have to press the F12 key to get to a boot device list and then select the CD Drive.

If this solves your problem, please take the time to leave feedback.

The problem is caused by Formatting the HDD in Vista before moving back to the system.

Simplest fix, hook it back to the Vista system and delete the partition from the drive in disk management. Once that is done, then put the drive with no partition in the XP system and boot to the XP CD, create a new partition and install XP
