I have an old modem Tankless Water Heater made by Rheem. It is Ecosense and I cost the remote control when I move. It was never hook up before and now is the first time. The model is PTG-74PVN-2.
I seem to me that it ran for a few second when turn on and soon it stops.
Any help would be appreciated.

Without the display - you cannot be sure why the unit is shutting down. There will be an error code listed as to the problem.
While it is not ESSENTIAL, and it CAN be used without - you cannot see the error code(s) being generated.

Please use the troubleshooting data in the manual, this will enable you to troubleshoot, and repair.

Whether it's a gas-powered stove or oven, or a gas-powered boiler, furnace or water heater, there's a pilot light involved. A pilot, being what it is (a tiny flame), will likely go out from time to time, even if there is nothing wrong with your system. After all, a brief interruption in gas flow or a stiff gust of air is about all it takes. That being said, a pilot shouldn't go out frequently, and if it does, you need to get a technician in to look for problems.
That being said, what should you do at first if the pilot goes out? Procedures vary depending on whether it's a stove top, oven or other appliance (like a boiler, furnace or water heater). Let's start with the easier ones: the stove and oven, then we'll move on to the more complex appliances. (If your appliance has instructions about relighting the pilot, follow them first and foremost; the advice below is general and may not apply to all units.)

STOVETOP PILOTS * Turn the burner control knobs off.
* Remove the cooking grates and cooktop, if necessary.
* Find the pilot light ports and light each that is out with a match.
* Replace the grates and cooktop.
* Turn on the burners one at a time to make sure they are working now.
Pilot flames on stovetops should generally be 3/8 of an inch high. You can adjust the flame's height if you need to, though. Follow the pilot lot back from the pilot toward the oven control to find the adjustment screw. Turn the screw until your flame is the proper height.
* Turn the oven control knob off.
* Remove the broiler carriage.
* Light a match and hold it to the top forward section of the pilot.
* Put the broiler carriage back in place.
Generally speaking, there is no need (and no way) for you to adjust the pilot flame for an oven.
* Turn off the appliance, either at the thermostat or power switch.
* Locate the gas valve, which normally displays three positions ("on," "off" and "pilot"), and turn it to "pilot."
* Press the gas valve knob in to send gas to the burner.
* Hold a lighted match to the pilot burner. You may need a long match (such as those used for fireplaces) or may need to hold a shorter match with a pair of pliers to reach the burner.
* Light the pilot, but continue pressing in the gas valve knob for 30 to 60 seconds.
* Let go of the gas valve button.
* If the pilot doesn't stay lighted, try the process again once or twice more before exploring the possibility of other problems.
* If the pilot flame stays lighted, turn the gas valve knob to "on."
* Close the access panel.
* Turn the appliance back on at the thermostat or power switch.
If you have a spark ignition for the pilot, you won't need a lighted match. Instead, you need to push that ignition button, and you may need to do this several times if there is air in the line.
If your pilot light goes out more than once every season, there's a good chance you have a mechanical or other physical problem that needs to be fixed. The possibilities include (but are not limited to):
* A thermocouple that has gone bad or is loose
* A bad gas valve
* Low gas pressure or blockage that causes a poor flame
* A downdraft or high wind/air movement or some other sort
* Damaged heat exchanger
* Improper venting
* Problems with the flue or chimney
* You're out of fuel (it may sound obvious, but people often forget this possibility)

I have a Richmond tankless water heater and it has L1 error code...can somebody help me with this?

Might be able to help. Except L1 does not show on any error code file.
Copy following link for Rheem Richmond Ecosense etc computer water heater troubleshoot resources
Are you sure the error is not IL? Delime tankless.
Or UL flashes and indicates reset.
Or CL flashes and indicates fault history is cleared.
Or error 11 combustion failure? Call for service.
Or P1? Low water pressure, clean water filter check for leaks and crossover caused by bad single-handled faucet cartridge.
I recommend calling Rheem to find local technician who is qualified to work on tankless computers. Tankless are not ordinary water heaters, and they require continual maintenance to avoid common error codes, especially as unit gets 2-3 years old, after warranty has expired.
The required maintenance and expense of repairs, and general fact that people cannot make their own repairs, make tankless computers a bad choice for heating water.
If unit is 4-5 years old, it might be best to install tank-type heater for $385 from Lowes and cut losses.

I have a ecosense tankless water heater #rtg-74pvn-2 how far can i take the vent

Feb 2013
1) Rheem/EcoSense tankless product manual does not have specifications for length. Error 11 will let you know if venting is improper.
Often, tankless are installed outside because unobstructed venting is key for combustion of the amount of gas coming out of 3/4" gas line.

2) Copy following link for Bradford White venting: Exactly same as Rheem, but more installation detail. No maximum lengths given.
For lengths greater than 5 feet, a condensate trap must be installed. Acidic water from hydrocarbon combustion will damage metal, and destroy heat exchanger inside tankless if water drips back into unit.

3) Copy following link for tank-type power vent tables:
Generally, the longer distance requires larger vent diameter, and there is max number of elbows and/or air-flow restrictions.

4) Otherwise call Rheem/EcoSense, and add comment saying what resources they offer.

3) Product manual usually give list of required yearly maintenance.
Perform the maintenance, just like changing oil on car, and then service technician is familiar with your water heater and can count on your money each year around Christmas.

4) For independence, reliability, cost, and convenience, don't buy tankless water heater, or any other expensive/complicated water heater that requires yearly maintenance, and generally cannot be repaired by homeowner.

Error code C4 76. Water heater shuts off (only with shower use). Will reset and work 4-5 min. then off agin. works fine from sinks. Unit is app 3 years old and did work fine.

Before calling service technician, open following link for Rheem tankless resources, including error codes and general help for homeowner.

C7 76 is communication fault with remote control.
Remote is connected to tankless with a wire.
Usually you remove wires from terminals on tankless, and see if tankless functionality returns.
If tankless works fine, then it will heat to default 120 degrees.
Clean terminals and put them back.
If problem returns, then problem is then narrowed to bad wire, bad remote control, or problem inside tankless.
Since new remote control costs about $99, it might be cheaper to have service technician review the problem and catch up with maintenance.
Error codes are considered starting points for troubleshoot since error can have different soultion than same error on another unit.

Read manual for advisories, error codes, and required maintenance.
For example tankless might require monthly water filter cleaning, and yearly de-liming, and yearly burner cleaning.
Your service technician can advise what is typical for your region, since altitude, incoming water temperature, quality of water, water pressure, venting, are factors for maintaining water heater.
