I am using a static IP from our ISP in a Linksys Router. I have a 2003 Server network with 12 clients. Should the work statinos be setup using a static or DHCP.

Hi gmcs_499. It doesnt matter because your internal IP scheme (either static or DHCP) is controlled though the router or your 2003 server, not your ISPs. You use NAT (Network Address Translation) to go out to the internet. that would be more of a choice. If you dont use any Remote services on the work stations, such as Remote Desktop, VNC, etc.. I would leave it as DHCP.

DNS-servers translate names, such as 'www.fixya.com' to IP-addresses, because routing of IP-packets on the Internet is done using the IP-addresses, not by using the names of each computer.

If you have a router between your computers and your cable-modem (or DSL-modem), then the router can automatically supply the "Primary DNS Server" and "Secondary DNS Server" and "IP Address" to your server computer, if you configure the network-adapter on the server to "automatically obtain an IP Address".

As long as you leave your server running, the "dynamic" IP-address that it obtains will, in effect, become a "static" (namely "non-changing") IP-address.

Linksys wrt160nl wireless router causing e-mail issues


Hmm... That sounds like a port forwarding issue. I take it that you using a POP3 e-mail client since you said your ISP e-mail server sends you your messages? I would suggest that you open up your linksys configuration (the webpage for the settings), click on the Applications & Gaming tab and Single Port Forwarding sub tab. Then, for the first row, select POP3 as Application Name, and your computer's IP Address as To IP Address, enabled it, and click save settings at the bottom. This should hopefully make it work.

How to configure the two wifi router


Are you trying to cascade two wireless routers? If yes, here's how:

1. First make sure that the first router (will serve as the server router) should be working. And then get the IP address of the server router.

2. Connect a CAT5 cable from the WAN port of the server router and the other end of the CAT5 cable should be connected to any of the LAN ports of the client router (which is the second router).

3. Then connect a computer directly to the client router and access its WEB UI.

4. Disable the DHCP server capability of the client router and set a static IP on the client router and make sure that it has the same IP range as the server router so that they would communicate.

5. After making sure that the two routers are on the same IP range, connect a computer to the server router and then ping the IP of the client router. Once you can ping it, then it should work.

If you're having a trouble with the setup or should you wish to have more information about the router, then refer to the router's user manual for necessary information.

I have a windows 2003 SBS Standard Edition and IP Address: 192.168.1.5 also a Linksys WRV210 and the IP address 192.168.1.1 I have setup a preferred DNS on all clients to 192.168.1.5 The internet is not...


For that connect your router to directly to lan ports of your server.and install another ethernet lan card on server so that ports connect with switch.
Then configure your router as bridge connection then set dns as your server ip in all computers.Then you can get 100% fast internet.

hello, is your server 2003 setup as DNS server??? if so have you configured forwarder for non- local access? is that a home? or business? is it work do you not have a static public IP address.

here whats happening, when you manually give client the DNS they can resolve everything local fine but when a request for outside world is sent your server doesn't know what to do with it. log on to server open up your dns console, right click on your domain, then select properties, find forwarder tab and add a any reliable public DNS server there ( ie I use 4.2.2.1 (att)) server pretty quick and reliable.
so next time a request is sent to your server and server doesn't have that information it forward that to the public DNS and you will be good to go.

but from your setup i am gathering there is plently you do to improve your network and reduce your headache of manual work.

typical setup: 1- setup DNS with forwarder
2- Setup DHCP on Server instead of router ( trust me its easier than you think)
3- put all setting to for clients in DHCP options
4- reserve IPs for servers/prineters/switches etc.
5- set all clients for DHCP
6-disable DHCP on router.

Use static IP addresses. Do not DHCP from the router. Still use the same DNS and gateway. Just specify an IP address for each one, preferably not in the DHCP range used on the router.

Linksis router wont work help me out


First of all contact your isp and get your connection settings. If you are able to setup the router using the cd provided then good. If you are still having problems then go ahead and contact linksys (remember linksys charges for the support). I suggest get a technician to assist you in setting up.

Just a bit of explanation. E0 interface is for inside network (LAN interface). E1 is for outside (ISP or WAN physical interface). Dialer1 is for PPPoE (the "actual"/logical WAN interface). The 1.0.0.13 is ISP provided static IP address for the use of the server. This configuration example is for running FTP server, which uses the standard TCP port 20 and 21.

The LAN uses 10.10.10.0 network with 255.255.255.0 subnet for both servers and workstations. All servers within the LAN use static IP address. The router is configured as DHCP server to give out IP info (IP addresses, subnet mask, DNS) to workstations that are configured as DHCP client.

Basically I suggest that you deploy NAT (Network Address Translation) and PAT (Port Address Translation) to setup your own servers behind Cisco router. The NAT is used to translate the ISP's given static IP address to your local IP address. The PAT is used to translate TCP ports (the port 20 and 21) between the two IP addresses.

When using NAT/PAT, keep in mind that the Internet-accessible servers are seen from the Internet as their NAT/PAT-ed IP address (the Public IP address) and not the local IP address (not the Private IP address). This understanding is very important when you or someone need to test connectivity to the server and/or when you need to create filter (access list or ACL for short) to allow only certain incoming traffic from the Internet and block others.

Instruments used in this illustration are pretty much standard for running your own servers. Please note that IP addresses, username, and password are changed. However, you could always modify the configuration to suit your situation.

This sample configuration assumes that you have a block of IP from ISP. There is a dedicated Public IP address for the router WAN interface (the Dialer1 interface) and another dedicated Public IP address for the server PAT IP address. If you only have a single Public IP address for both router WAN interface and server PAT IP address, there are several ways to configure the router.

One way is to use the same command as shown in sample configuration.

This one configuration way is suitable when you have static IP address from your ISP and you know exactly what the IP address is. In this case you have the 1.1.1.14 single static IP address for both the WAN interface and Public server IP address.

When you are unsure which IP address you receive from the ISP, or when your Public IP address keep changing; then another way to configure the static PAT is following

With situation of dynamic IP address, at some point you still need to know the exact Public IP address you receive from your ISP for server connection testing and production time. To find out, you can issue show ip interface brief command on the router. You will then see the associated WAN interface Public IP address.

Multiple WAN IP Addresses with a Linksys Router


Yes, however we recommend using the following procedure is the only way you can do so without a block of IP addresses. The example below is for instances where you have multiple public IP addresses that are not in block form. For our example the ISP has given us 3 Public IP addresses. One goes to the FTP server, Web Server, and the Router. You can setup the router for whomever your ISP is. If you have a dynamic IP address and you're unsure on the setup, please see the article on setting up the router with a static IP address. If you have a static IP address please our article on setting up static IP addresses with the router, and it will describe how to setup the router with a static IP address. Once the router is setup, it will provide the 3 PC's (In our example) with internet access. The remaining two public IP addresses should be assigned to the WEB Server and the FTP server. Note - The Web and FTP servers will not be on the Local Area Network of PC-1, PC-2, and PC.
