Tractor clicks when key is turned, but doesn't always start.

Tractor is a '97 19.5 hp with almost all original parts. Battery is brand new. Would it most likely be the solenoid, starter, one of the safety switches or something else? Starts strong when it does start!

If you have a new battery and it clicks, it is not a safety switch, but we won't rule out the solenoid yet, I would say dirt, check the battery terminal for dirt, clean them up with a wire brush, Make sure the battery is good, test it for voltage and specific gravity, one of those floaty ball things. Try it, if it still clicks, get the hammer, tap on one of the bolts holding the starter, just lightly to loosen the solenoid, if it jumps to life, you have found your problem, if not, Hit it harder, no, It doesn't have to be hit hard at all, just a tap will do it. My John Deere tractor has a hammer on the running board, the only way I can start it. The bolt head is rounded right off. Been like that for 15 years. Hope this helps.

Craftsman DLT 3000 lawn tractor. It won't turn over with a new battery.

Question edited for clarity, 'make model (what it is)'.
Question moved from Cars and Trucks.

Batteries can be new and not be fully charged. Lots of ideas in the link, but test the starter solenoid first.

This battery tells you how to load test a battery, about connection being clean. Also that new batteries aren't always fully charged. He explains the solenoid function

And another good electrical testing video.

The battery is brand new and when hook it up and turn the key the neutral light and the hot light come on but when I hit the start button it clicks and doesn't click anymore. Not even turning over. Th

Remove battery terminals and clean both posts and terminals
with sandpaper until you see shiny metal. The black coating is lead sulphate which has a high resistance to current flow both into and out of the battery. Charge the battery as not all batteries are charged sufficiently when new to do the job. Also not all new batteries are good batteries as they suffer manufacturing faults which allow them to discharge internally. some batteries are sold without the acid so check that is not the case.. Check all terminal connections including any earth wires.

What is wrong when you turn the key to start and the radio and all the instruments turn on but the starter doesn't click and the engine doesn't turn on even after trying to jump start it

Dead battery

Dangerous practice to try & jump a dead battery

The battery cables could be loose at either end or corroded internally

Most likely the battery is worn out, if original to car
since it was new, or the starter solenoid is worn

You do not want to jump any vehicle made after the
year 2000 or your asking for possible problems with
todays electronics.

You need a good battery that has been tested & fully
charged, then only jump with a jump pack, not another car

Hey Frank,
I would replace the battery either way with it being that old. If there is a dead cell in it, it won't allow enough juice to get to the starter. www.nnyparts.com

Turn key and get a click

the started is probably jammed and needs to be unbolted and put starter bendix gear back in starting position turning over an engine too long on a jump start can cause this
