Question about Philips Magnavox 51MP392H Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Manual convergence -service mode

Just replaced the two convergence chips in my 52" Magnavox projection TV. All went well and I'm now in the service mode but the service manual doesn't make any clear references as to what to adjust and how to adjust it.

All colors and concave and off-center. I can go in to set the convergence on the colors but feel like I'm going blind before too long.

Is there a specific order this has to be done in or any other adjustments that have to be made before I go any further with this?

You have some resistors that are still open . If the ICs go a resistor or two usually go open and you cant always tell unless you remove 1 leg out of circuit and check that the resistance is within 5% of the rated resistance. Trying to adjust it by the service menu will only place extra strain on the new ICs and they will blow on you. The resistors are located right next to the ICs there are about 8 of them all I dentical. Very easy to spot.

03 philps 52' rear projection red and green lines laping?

Hi, I used to work in Best Buy and one of the key things about rear projection TVs and the reason they push those service plans on you is that the tubes/colors need to be calibrated each year. You can do this yourself by checking out the following website:

http://lgknowledgebase.com/kb/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=3229

If you are not able to adjust the convergence using the remote you will need to replace the convergence chips.

Typical Symptoms

1) Convergence menu does not work for one or more colors.
Such as: Red moves up,down, but left or right fails.

2) Screen is bowed looking.

If you have one or more of the problems above you need to replace the convergence chips. You can get a kit and instructions from www.TvRepairKits.com

Hope this helps :)

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

My big screen projection philips tv screen is bleeeding

Mark, if red & blue are seperated from the normal image then the convergence circuit has failed, this means the IC`s will have to be removed and replaced as well as any resistors that may have burned when the chip(s) went bad, the alignment that must be performed after the new IC`s are installed can be a pain especially without the service manual, I`d advise a tech for this one, video-tek
