It seems like there ought to be a way to access the hinge at home and and work on it . . .

Wekk what i have done before is to use some light adhesive, and inject irt into the Hinge area, now work the hinge backwards and forwards as the glue drys, to ensure that it will NOT glue it solid, keep moving the hinge until the setting period, has expired, now you will find, that the increased resistance offered by the "Glue" remnants, is often enough to take the Slack out of the Hinge. Sometimes too a Silicone sealant can be injected into the space, and again worked in, this too, often increases resistance enough, to give more friction, or sticktion, and allow for a "Tighter" feeling hinge. Another way i have used is to use a soldering iron, and dimple the bottom surface of the hinge, with the effect of having a little pattern of Pin-Hills, that again, will "Bind" up the hinge somewhat and again, tighten it all up. another methods have used a small screw just binding through the bottom of the hinge, and just enough to impinge of the bearing inside, and again, stiffen it all up.

Do the eyepieces adjust for pupil width, as in side to side? thanks

Yes, just like on all but the very cheapest of binoculars.

Assuming that you are asking about the Leica Geovid BD 7x42, there's an obvious central hinge down the middle of the unit and you just straighten the hinge to increase the inter-ocular distance and bend at the hinge to reduce it. Exactly the same as on almost all binoculars.

The strap fixing on one side has come adrift from the body of the binoculars

This needs to be returned to leica for repair. That lug is integral with the body and that is the only solution. The place that you bought them from should be able to give you further information on the return for warranty repair.

Yes , but note that covers are glued so use a pin to  lift cover gently . The screw should be secured --when you are finished tightening-- with 'locktight' or touch of nail varnish.
