I think we have the same problem with the Exlim s600 model, if the camera take picture outdoor, the picture is almost white, with horizontal line. I have taken it to the repair center at Compex, Quezon Ave., They say the problem is in the camera CCD lense. which cost P7,500 to fix. A new one Casio 8.1 meg pixel, cost just about P8 to 9T. I bought mine March 2006, Use it for only about 35 times. got a feeling these camera were made to be broken just about after the warranty expire.

Help in setting the color mode to take black & white pics

Press MENU. Use left/right to select the Capture tab. Use up/down to select "Color Mode".

In general, I suggest shooting in color. A photo-editing program gives you much more control over the conversion to black-and-white, allowing you to adjust brightness, contrast, etc.

Im trying to take a photo of a black top but it keeps coming out grey, there is also a white blur round the edge of the top

Might be the wrong camera to take a professional shot with. The white balance is being read from the surrounding envionment so tends to lighten the intensity of the contrast. You may be able to alter the intensity on the PC in a pohotoshop program.. SATURATION, HUE, COLOR BALANCE option. You cannot generally get an intense black on screen of cheap camera in daylight or even using flash. The camera is designed to give an average overall metering through the lens.

Higher quality cameras let you alter the Kelvins ( temperature) of the shot to improve on contrast etc. They also have spot metering, which is a series of boxes seen through the viewfinder that can be programed to allow for depth of field focus and contrast metering.

So if you dont have a better camera then use a photo manipulating program to change the picture to your liking

"whiteout"

If the photo shoot out show white , the obscure (quality variation),and even horizontal line ( white lines), and so on over-exposure cases, even if the use of anti-tremor, set to default values are invalid, because the camera shutter fault.

Can't repair by yourself.
It's need repair camera machine shutter.

Casio Exilim s500--horizontal lines in picture and autofocus creates blurry pics

It appears this problem is due a failing CCD device in many brand cameras. All the manufactures use the same source(s). I have not persued Casio as yet, but other companies are offering a recall to replace the CCD for free. I plan to use this approach with Casio. Search the web for "failing CCD in digital camera", it describes exactly what we are observing.

This is a CCD failure. Go to the Casio Tech support team. There has been an issue with a batch of CCD's and a recall on certain models of all makes This may be one of them

What is the Digital Effects Control (DEC)?

With this function, you can adjust exposure, contrast, and saturation through the viewfinder itself, prior to image capture. You can check how your adjustments will look using either the viewfinder or the LCD monitor. This feature makes it easy to get the unique images you want in many different shooting situations. DiMAGE 7i is capable of setting contrast, color saturation and filter in the following increments. Contrast: In seven levels from -3 to +3 Color Saturation: In seven levels from -3 to +3 Filter: In seven levels ranging from warm (reddish) to cool (bluish) colors.

Image adjustment functions

SHARPNESS - The function is to adjust sharpness of capturing images. CONTRAST - The function is to adjust contrast (distinction between light and dark) of capturing images. SATURATION - The function is to set color depth of capturing images. GRADATION - In this function, you can select the brightness of an entire image. It is suitable when you want to add a brighter effect to a bright object (Hi Key) and a darker effect to a dark object (Low Key).
