Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have just been placed on insulin. I have the Black & Decker BNA17B fridge and I need to know how temps correspond to the control knob inside the fridge. The insulin instructions say the insulin needs to be refrigerated between 36-46 degress F.

Good day,
Mid-range settings (halfway between coldest and warmest) is, on almost all models near 37 degrees.
Due to the sensitivity of your medicine you should as well buy an accurate thermometer to keep track and fine tune as needed.
As well, machines malfunction and the thermometer is the best way of being sure.

Lots of luck.

Black & decker refrigerator bna17b runs all the time. never shuts off. keeps thing cool, but always running.

If, the refrigerator, was working well at first, start and stop cyclically, when was new, the solution is to clean the internal fans, because having poor air circulation leads to the temperature sensor to a wrong reading

If not turned off since new, that's one was made in China and the control board has a bad factory solder, so the refrigerator starts to cause problems when the fans, that are working 24 hours at day, falling on wear or dirty then stop working , causing a lack of cooling and cracking the Peltier modules.

I have a B & D BNA17B mini fridge that won't get cold. Can this be 'recharged' like an air-conditioner?

My BNA17B mini fridge also died but it was not the heat sink. I had a blown fuse and two bad power supply filter caps. The fuse is a 3 amp, soldered to the board. I replaced it with a fuse holder and 2.5A fuse. The capacitors are 330uf 250VDC electrolytics. If you replace yours make sure you get the polarity correct. See photo, you can see the bad cap already removed and the replacement on the board.

My Black & Decker bna17b mini fridge simply does not cool enough. The manual claims it should get down to 37 degrees Fahrenheit in a 70 degree room. I put the setting on high (coldest) and my milk...

Sorry Brian & Charles, but you missed the boat on this one.
This Black & Decker refrigerator uses Peltier Thermo-electric modules on heat sinks. If you blow off the dust and the unit still does not cool, these modules have probably gone bad.

The heat sinks/modules attach to the back of the fridge with two screws each. Unplug the power, remove the screws and then remove the heat sink/cooling fan units. On the refrigerator side will be a smooth plate with two wires coming out of it. Plug the fridge in and touch this plate. If it is not cold to the touch, your Peltier module is bad. You can buy new ones for about $20 each - Parts Express has the Velleman brand Peltier 2 model. But seriously, you'd probably be better off just buying a new fridge.

Fridge and freezer same temp.

First of all, there is only one thing that cools in a fridge and that is the freezer. The fresh food section is cooled by air forced into it from the freezer.
  • You ice maker will not work if the temp inside the freezer is above 5 degrees. It has a thermostat inside it that enables it.
  • The knob that turns the fridge off and on is the thermostat for the freezer.
  • The other knob opens and closes a damper between the freezer and fresh food section.
  • There is a fan that should be running that pulls air from the freezer into the fresh food section.
(The factory does make the discription of the knobs confussing)

Now. turn one of the knobs all the way one way and then the next. If it turns the compressor off, it's the thermostat. If it does not, try the other knob. Once you find the thermostat, set it in the middle of the scale. Now place the other knob the same. Check and see if you can either feel or hear the inside fan running. If so lets go to the back. This is where your compressor is. It is under the fridge and also has a fan that blows on it. You will need to remove the back bottom panel. See if you can tell if the fan is running. Also notice if the fan is blowing into a set if coils. You should also be able to fill the compressor, if it's hot, it's running. If these two are running, and you didn't see a coil at the fan. Take the front kick panel off the fridge and clean the coil that's under the fridge. If it's dirty, give the fridge a couple hours and see if it cools down. If so, this was your problem. If both knobs are set mid scale, both fans are running, the compressor is also running and the coils are clean. You most likely have a bad timer, compressor or thermostat. This is all that's left.
