I am trying to reassemble a B&D grass clipper gs500 after replacing the battery which functions well. I cannot remember how to position the switch inside the case

  • luckeyrich May 07, 2010

I know how to turn it on.

I want to know how the switch itself is positioned inside the case. I took this apart months ago to get a new battery and am just getting to reassembling it. I cannot remember where the switch is placed or how it is attached. Someone who understands the internal arrangement of the parts needs to try to answer this if they can.

I have just come up with a workable solution although not a typical one. I would still like confirmation if available since that is what I paid for.

I am trying to learn how to mount the on/off switch on the common B&D grass clipper GS500. Don't even attempt to answer this unless you have seen how one is installed.

My quest was the placement of the switch in the cabinet. No one replying has the vaguest notion of the interior configuration of the gs500. The exterior of the switch consists of a large lever under the handle and a significant slide on top of the handle which is a safety that has to be moved first. The actual switch is placed somewhere inside the body and is quite difficult to visualize without help. It is not fastened and is simply blocked in place by various structures. It is almost accidental that moving the external bars accomplishes the desired result. There is a small coil spring inside the large lever that seems superfluous until the actual purpose is seen.

I spent quite some time finding anywhere it could even be placed before reaching the working arrangement. The clipper is regarded as disposable and no one, B&D included, seems to have looked inside one after its assembly in Asia. I would furnish the correct view if I thought anyone else would ever GAS.

I believe FixYa has not approached a helpful comment.

So far I have gotten no help at all. 4 people who know nothing about this actual device have offered suggestions not dealing at all with the problem have stated repeatedly as clearly as I can.

The rechargeable battery was failing and I ordered a new one. Several weeks elapsed before I got around to installing the new battery and the other, used components. When I got to the on/off switch, I could not see any way to install it. Black and Decker offered no service advice at all. I asked Google and FixYa appeared to offer "expert" help.

The 4 experts obviously knew nothing about the gs500 and took blind shots at something they thought might pertain to some other feature. In short, I paid $10 to learn how little help was available on FixYa.

I have already recorded my own later efforts to successfully get a working clipper back together.

I don't want another expert or more help from the present ones. I would like to hear from somebody that has taken this thing apart and put it together so that it still runs. The internal placement of the switch is strongly counter-intuitive.

That button is mounted together with the lock button on the top. Now, do you still have that spring? Put it between the two legs of the Lock button and then put the whole assembly in the big hole from the on-off button. Now, the on off button has two axes (one on each side) that hold the button in place but also lets you press the button on the opposite end. Those axes must go in the small hole made on the top of the inside of the case (about halfway through).
Please note that you must still have the spring and also the two axes must be intact. You can't do it otherwise.

'It appears your switch is broken. Please drop in to a retailer and ask the clerk to show you or exchange your machine for another.

If i understood correctly this is a rechargeable tool and if you are referring on the top button position the correct should be on= button pushed ahead
off = button pulled back
they are all built this way for safety reasons..
If I misunderstood your question ...please be more specific...

I can help you with the Black and Decker GS500 on/off switch:

  1. Disconnect charger before attempting to turn switch “ON”.
  2. To turn “ON”, slide the locking button “A” FORWARD with your thumb, and hold it FORWARD momentarily, while you squeeze the trigger switch “B”. The trigger has been designed so that it is very easy to hold in the “ON” position.
  3. To turn “OFF”, merely release the trigger.

Hello. Forward is on and back is off. It sounds like your clipper is dead, most likely the battery is shot. You can get a new battery but for the difference in cost and the peace of mind with a warranty you may decide to give your clipper a fitting funeral and get another one. Joe

I need a new spring to replace the lost one that makes the spool advance. Its a Grass hog that is a few years old. Not battery powdered, but electric. Can yoy tell me where to buy one or what size...

They have upgraded the old string heads (type 1) to a new string head (type 2). They say type 1 is no longer available. Please see part numbers 20 & 21 in this 14" Grass Hog parts breakdown diagram. The new string head is relatively inexpensive. If you don't want to get one, could I suggest you take the old spring (if you have it) and match it up with possibly a new spring at the hardware store. Sometimes you get lucky! Here is the parts diagram for it. Hope this helps!

Ditch that old switch, and buy a better quality switch from HomeDepot or RadioShack that will suit your need. I personally ran into that same problem and brought a 2HP GP switch from HomeDepot. It works way better, than that stock swicth. ( It may require a little modification to the body though.)
