Question about Samsung HLN617W 61" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Samsung HLN617W wont come on

The lights showed lamp replacement, I installed a new lamp but set wouldn't come on. I re-set the lamp and messed with the switch in the back and still nothing, just a beeping noise. I took it to a TV repairman, he tells me the color wheel is fine but I need to replace the flywheel $360. What is that, and am I getting ripped off?

Thanks

Unit does not have a flywheel. Assemblies include lamp, ballast, color wheel, dmd board, light tunnel, main and/or digital and analog pcb as well as power supply. These are all the assemblies in DLPs. The problem you described is usually lamp or ballast, but can also be from dmd or other circuit boards. Make sure lamp cover door safety switch is secure and fully engaged after replacing lamp or removing rear cover. I admit these sets are not cheap to repair. Good luck, Russmann.

Hey friend:
most probably' 1) either your lamp was NOT installed correctly, or
2) lamp is bad - (it happened to me once, so no sweat!) - in this case you need to return the lamp in exchange for a new one.
Please watch any of the 'how to change the lamp on a dlp tv' video demo available on YouTube. Its not difficult. I already changed mine 3 or 4 times. Thanks

He may have meant "fly back" in this case referring to the ballast transformer for the lamp.
The ballast can be obtained from HERE for far less then he is charging. It is all but a swap out part. The only thing is the site has a wait time of almost 70 days though it will give you an idea of what price to expect for the part, then add labour onto that.

You have found the fault! Clear the exhaust filter as there is not enough air cooling the lamp housing.

Samsung hln617w TV Dlp lamp won't turn on already replaced lamp, ballast, color wheel

It sounds like the main power supply has a bad capacitor. its a typical issue with a lot of electronic. look on the main power board that the outlet cord comes in to the TV and check all the cylindrical components for swelling, leakage, or singe makes.

Samsung hln617w dlp tv won't turn on. Red temp

Had similar problem. Thought it was the lamp. Examined old lamp but it appeared to be good. Ordered a new one anyway. Changed the lamp but the TV screen would not come on. It would make the usual noise as it was going to come on normally but it would cycle 3 times & then turn off. The LED lights in the front panel would indicate a defective lamp. Then read about the ballast. Changed the ballast & still same problem. Tried starting the TV without the lamp installed & noticed that the color wheel did not spin. Removed old color wheel & discovered it was broken. This appears to be the cause of all of my problems. I wish I new earlier of the test-turn on the TV without the lamp being installed & check to see if the color wheel is spinning. Would have save money on the lamp & ballast.

No picture but sound once it goes off there is 3 blinking lights

Most likely for this symptom is the lamp. If you'd like you could sit behind the set and have someone turn it on, you should hear the color wheel spin up and then you should hear the ballast try to fire the lamp, it makes a small arcing sound. If the lamp doesn't light the process starts over again.

Samsung HLN617W Tantus 61" DLP occasionally will not turn on.

It sounds to me like you have an issue with the ballast not firing the lamp. It sound like you know to check the lamp, but there is no way to check the ballast, unless you replace it. The ballast is not that tricky to replace, but if you are not sure I would refer you to a technician to replace the part.

Problem turning On

The lamp, ballast or dmd board can cause the same problem. Most commonly on these DLPs it is the lamp, but we have to use the process of elimination as well sometimes. Even as a samsung warranty center sometimes the flow charts don't help. The first thing I would do as a consumer is to vacuum around the ventilation holes behind set, these can cuase poor circulation and startup/shutduwn problems. Then with those type of lights flashing start by bidding for or buying the most inexpensive lamp you can get. Make sure exact replacement. Do not touch the glass on lamp when replacing. Then try the ballast which also has a part number on it and has only two screws when you have lamp removed from set. If still no luck, assume it is the dmd board and try pricing that baby. Not cheap! Then comes the decision. New set or repair this. This is what you can expect unfortunately. But I have the same set at home. Go figure.

Samsung HLN617W 61 i

it is not related to the failure of the fan or color wheel by anything other then the age of the set..the lamp has a normal life of 4000 to 6000 hours and since your set is around 3.5 years old it probably has that amount of time on it..the lamp is consumer replaceable and many places sell them..the lamp number should be on a small sticker on the side of the set
