Clean the spark plug, toss a little gas in the cyl, pull the cord, If that doesn't do it, let it set for a while, the oil will settle down, and it will start again. Just keep the plug clean. Hope this helps.

RM40 Manual

Hi there
My son was mowing our Scout Hut grass using our RM40
lawnmower. He had cut the main area of lawn & tried to cut some longer grass near a gate. The mower got jammed & started smoking so he switched it off. Now the motor seems to be working but the blade is not turning. Any idea what the problem might be?

try removing the belt and try to spin the blades by hand. are they stiff to turn? if yes try to oil the bearing assys up under there and spin em again. if that seems to work out put the belt back on and mow away again! seen this on a neighbors rider a few times

If there is gas in the oil you drained from crankcase the carb is really dumping fuel(did you see black smoke?) If your carb has a drain plug drain it. If not you will have to take off the carb bowl and clean it. Check float operation, turn on fuel work float by hand to make sure gas shuts off when float rises to level position. If not may need needle and seat kit. Or adjust float.

With the engine cold, check the oil level. Oil level is quite important especially in a smaller engine. Try to clean all excess oil off engine and body. Then, if you can get it running....check for any leaks. If it is still smoking, it has other issues besides being too full of oil. The oil breather will be full of oil. The oil filter may be saturated with oil. Check those 2 things especially as they allow motor oil to be drawn into the carburetor and cause excessive smoking. Pull out and clean the spark plug. Post back if needed.

MY Kawasaki FH500V commercial lawn mower engine won't start.

Try cleaning the throttle body. If it runs on carb-cleaner being sprayed into the intake then you have a fuel delivery problem, if not you'd be more inclined to more serious mechanical failure. I assume if you use it every day you do the regular oil changes, air filter cleaning, and air-cooling system cleaning, correct? Please indicate if you had a white smoke, blue smoke, or black smoke from the mower too. The motor spins freely when attempting to start, and just doesn't fire, correct?

The oil entered the cyliders when the mower was tipped at a severe angle. It will clear out after you run it for awhile. Check the oil level to make sure it is full. It could even be overfull and this is what caused the smoke. If it starts to run badly, check the spark plug or plugs. They could get "fouled" from the oil. Change the if the are black or covered with oil. It shouldn't have done any damage to the engine.

Oil causing a problem?

Sound as if you have too much oil in the machine. Anytime you see white or lite gray smoke it is a sign of too much oil. Before you go through the routine of cleaning the oil out of every nook and cranny, try unscrewing the spark plug and clean it with a soft rag. It would have oil on it preventing the machine from starting. If this does work and there isn't a lot of oil in the gas tank now, just continue running the engine until the smoke clears. It won't hurt anything. But if cleaning the plug doesn't help you will have to empty all gas and oil from the gas tank, refill with new gas, squirt a little gum out carb cleaner in your carb to remove any oil there (this can be done when you try to restart the engine). Remember, when you are mowing grass if you are mowing on a hill) of any knd, make sure to turn the mower so the gas tank is on a higher level than the oil.
