My Porter Cable pancake air compressor is getting too hot and melting my air hose

ASSUMING THIS IS AN ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVEN SINGLE STAGE COMPRESSOR, IF THE COMPRESSOR USES OIL IN THE CRANKCASE, THE PRESSURE SWITCH SHOULD CUT OFF AT 125 PSI AS THE ACT OF COMPRESSION HEATS THE AIR QUITE HOT. THERE IS ALWAYS SOME OIL THAT PASSED THE PISTON RINGS IN THE COMPRESSED AIR. IF THE COMPRESSED AIR GETS HOT ENOUGH, THE OIL VAPOR CAN IGNITE AND THE FLAME CAN CARRY TO THE TANK FOR AN IMPRESSIVE EXPLOSION. THIS ORDINARILY DOES NOT HAPPEN BELOW 175PSI OR MORE.

OILLESS COMPRESSORS CAN BE SET TO 150 PSI. WITH EITHER TYPE OF COMPRESSOR, THE HOSE SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO THE REGULATOR OR THE REGULATOR STACK, NEVER TO THE COMPRESSOR, AS THE COMPRESSED AIR LOSES MUCH OF ITS HEAT WHILE IN THE RECEIVER. IF THE WHOLE TANK IS GETTING HOT ENOUGH TO MELT A PROPERLY ATTACHED HOSE, YOU HAVE A DANGEROUS SITUATION, CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE PRESSURE SWITCH, UNLOADER VALVE AND RELIEF VALVE. THE RELIEF VALVE SHOULD OPEN AT NO MORE THAN 150 PSI, THE UNLOADER VALVE OPENS WHEN THE PRESSURE SWITCH SHUTS THE MOTOR OFF, AND SHOULD ONLY HISS FOR A FEW SECONDS AS IT DUMPS THE PRESSURE ONLY IN THE COMPRESSOR AND THE LINE FROM THE COMPRESSOR TO THE TANK INLET CHECK VALVE. IF THE UNLOADER VALVE HISSES MORE THAN A FEW SECONDS, THE TANK INLET CHECK VALVE IS LEAKING AND NEEDS TO BE SERVICED, CLEANED OR REPLACED. IF THERE IS CARBON BUILD UP IN THE VALVE, THERE IS EXCESS OIL PASSING THE COMPRESSOR PISTON RINGS, REPLACING THEM MIGHT FIX THAT IF THE CYLINDER OR RING LANDS ON THE PISTON ARE NOT TOO TAPERED OR WORN.

My 6 gallon porter cable compressor stop working, how can it be fixed?

Check the voltage at the pressure switch and be sure the connections that are there are tight. check the voltage to the motor. If you have voltage to the motor then replace the motor.

The motor can't get going to keep air presure up.

problem same as your compressor usually problems in the piston, where it cannot compress air with strong, usually the ring piston is leak.

Air compressor runs but will not pump up?

The compressor part is a piston similar to a car motor. If you have an "oil free" they are known to loose compression and usually cost more to repair than to replace. Hopefully you have warranty left.

I have a pancake compressor that won't hold air pressure, leaks out of the small hole in the head. I have replaced the head gasket and air pressure valuve and still leaks out of the hole in the top head.

If you replaced the head gasket then its probably the valve plate and gasket.

My air compressor won't compress more than 40 lbs what can I do?

Your compressor is worn or dirty or both. Disassemble the head and inspect it. Look for dirt in the reed valves ... look for excess sloppyness in the piston (worn rings)

You may be able to repair this, expect to pay $50.00 for a kit (you dont ID the unit so I cannot make a recommendation) ... It may be cheaper to replace the unit rather than have it repaired professionally.

Husky pancake runs in reverse

I am a little confused here ... I have a Craftsman pancake, a Craftsman 6 hp (same compressor design) and several other name brand pancake compressors at the job. The compressor doesn't care which way the motor runs though mine all run in the same direction. As long as the piston goes up and down, the reed valves know when to open and when to closed based on the pressure. It sucks in from the 'room' on the down stroke and blows into the tank on the upstroke.

Yours isn't doing this? If it is creating a vacuum in the tank, I would have to say someone put the valves in upside down.

This is very curious.

You could reverse the black and white wire but as I understand the physics of it, it will not matter where the hot wire is since it is AC. The motor may be reversable but I'm thinking it is probably not in this case. That costs extra to make into the motor.

Please inspect the valves to make sure they are capable of 'inhaling' (the site will delete the other word I used) on the down stroke and 'exhaling' into the tank on the upstroke.

Please let me know what you find out.

Thanks for your curious question at FixYa.com

Most likely your portercable piston ring/seal broke. Its not hard to fix if you are mechanically inclined. See portercable site for rebuild kit.
