Question about Sub-Zero Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Constant odors from our built-in sub zero refrigerator interior.

Even after repeated cleanings, we can't seem to get rid of the odor from the interior of our refrigerator. if it's opened frequently, they seem to fade, but in normal use it is a problem. no spoiled or particularly stinky products, but a constant issue. is there a ventilation system that isn't working properly?

just a general food odor. like it's sealed so tight that any mild food scent is magnified. we've never experienced this with any other refrigerator that we've owned (GE, KitchenAid, Etc.) it isn't a brand-new sub zero, but relatively new. we recently (2 months ago) moved into a new home and have experienced this issue from day one. we 're wondering if there's some sort of ventilation system that isn't working....?

    Thanks for your response!!

That's OK. I thought that there is a Chemical or Burning Smell which could be of Concern.Regarding Food Odor, as such there is nothing you could do. Make sure all Fans are Working and running at Optimum Speed.

Make sure you should not Keep Refrigerator in enclosed Room / Kitchen. If it is in such a Room, change the Location of the refrigerator.

Few Other Basic Steps would be :-

Does your refrigerator have a water filter? if it has one it will be in the kickplate/grill below the freezer door. If it has one replace the filter.

Just a Bad Odor, have tried multiple cleanings and baking Soda

odors are caused by bacteria so you need to kill the bacterial action. start with a weak solution of bleach and warm water. I use about 2 tablespoons bleach to a quart of water. then rinse until all the bleach solution is removed. use paper towels to get every little bit of water out. next take a clean rag and put about a teaspoon of vanilla (real or artificial) on the rag. then rub all surfaces with the vanilla rag. Your sour odor will be replaced by the sweet smell of vanilla.

Some sort of irratating smell comes out of lg frige pls give suggestions

Hi Kalpana_bhar,

Seems like your refrigerator has an unpleasant odor. There are several ways on how to remove irritating smell out of your machine, first thing is to remove spoiled food and then clean the door seals. Here are some steps that you can apply to get rid of unpleasant odor.

Remember you safety, please unplug your machine or disconnect the unit from the power outlet before conducting any repair.

1. Remove spoiled food.

2. Then clean the refrigerator interior with a solution of hot water and baking soda.

3. You also need to check the door seals.
--> please clean the door seals with a toothbrush and solution of warm water and baking soda or you may use water and bleach. Please be careful not to pull too hard so you will not tear the seal.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Smelly Jenn-Air Refrigerator

some of the most elusive odors can be developed by a rotted piece of fruit, hidden behind drawers,or stowed away inside door shelving somewhere...to remove odors/take about 5-6 charcoal briquettes and wrap them in newspaper this will absorb odor, and yeah-it actually works leave them in for about 2 days

Odor can it be freon leak?

Two possible causes of odor on fridges:

* Freon Leak
* Defrost Drain Pan dirty.

If the fridge was unplugged for a while or there was a liquid dropped in the refrigerator, it's more likely to be the drain pan. It is located at the back of the appliance, above the compressor.

If it is clean and the smell is not coming from there, then you may suspect about the freon leak.

Odor

may have debris or algae in drain that runs down to underneath pan other than that the inside is glass plastic and metal with plastic covering nothing that would cause a smell or odor

Odor in GE side by side Fridge

Sounds like mold.  I'd try Lysol or one of the other products that claims to treat the odor cause in the air.  Spray a quantity into the empty fridge and freezer and turn it on.  Let the fans spread the stuff around. Try to find the internal vents which seem to pull air into the coils to spray into.

Bad Smell in Fridge

To remove odors:
1. Remove all items from refrigerator or freezer. Throw
out any spoiled foods. Take out removable parts and wash
them and door gasket with mild detergent in warm water.
Rinse well and wipe dry.

2. Wash interior walls and door liner with solution of 1-2
tablespoonsful of baking soda to 1 quart warm water, and
wipe dry. Leave door open and let it air out well, with a
fan directed toward inside, and opened windows if climate
permits.

3. If odor still remains, try one or all of the following
means of odor removal.

a. Spread baking soda out on shallow pans (like shallow
glass casseroles, pie plates, or jelly roll pans lined
with foil) and put pans on shelves to absorb odors, or on
the bottom and in baskets of chest freezer. Leave open
and unplugged.

b. Buy activated charcoal (which is specially treated to
remove odor molecules from air) at some department store
housewares sections, appliance store, or pet shop. Spread
out on shallow pans and put on shelves of refrigerator.
Turn refrigerator on low setting and run empty a few days
so odors will be absorbed.

c. Spread cat litter in shallow pan in cabinet, turn on
and run empty a few days. If odor is disappearing but is
not all gone, replace old litter with fresh litter.

d. Pour several ounces imitation vanilla (not pure
extract) in a shallow saucer, put on shelf and let run
empty a few days.

e. Put fresh ground coffee in cereal bowls inside the
refrigerator and let run empty several days. A slight
coffee odor may remain, but will disappear after washing
again with baking soda solution.

f. Pack each refrigerator shelf with crumpled newspaper.
Set a cup of water on the top shelf or sprinkle the
newspaper lightly with water. Allow refrigerator to run
for approximately 5-6 days. This method takes a bit longer
but has been effective in removal of strong odors.

g. Buy a commercial odor remover, and follow instructions
exactly. Several companies manufacture a liquid
concentrate which sells for about $3.00 for 1/4 to 1/2
ounce. A couple drops are put on a piece of cotton and
placed in the area to absorb odors, in the cabinet or
in a room.

Three of many brand names are: "Odor-Away" by Wrap-on
Co., available at hardware and hospital supply stores,
"SuperCD" IBL Household Products by Crackerbarrel Sales,
Avenal, New Jersey, available in pet supply department
or special products in grocery, or "Clean-Air" at some
appliance repair shops.

Hospital supply stores carry Dow Chemical Hospital
Disinfectant and Deodorant Spray. Spray into cabinet and
quickly shut the door. Repeat.

4. If none of these methods removes all the odor, then it
has probably penetrated into insulation. Contact an
appliance service company for an estimate on cost of
removing the liner and replacing the insulation. If cost
is too high you may prefer to get a new appliance. It
could be used for occasional cooling of soda pop where
the odor will not get into the beverage.
