I have a Toro 20056 rear-wheel drive mower. I am replacing the transmission v-belt. I've taken it off and have a new one. It came off easy but I'm having trouble figuring out how to get the new one around the pulley without taking the other pulley off that the blade connects to. Suggestions?

SOURCE: Dual blade mower leaves uncut strips between blades.

it sounds like you need to take the blades off and put a new edge on them which is easy with a bench grinder

SOURCE: toro 20073 self propeled, walk behind mower-how to replace belt ?

Wait until the mower cools off

1. Remove the drive belt cover from the top of the mower
2. Tip the mower up, being careful to not go too far or the oil and fuels may spill out
3. Remove the mower blade - as I recall the bolt is 5/8" (could be 9/16") You will have to hold the blade from turning (if you have impact tools, this will be much easier)
4. Remove the blade
5. Pull the pulley out or off and remove the belt - be careful to not lose the crankshaft "woodruff" key - it's the little piece of half/moon shaped metal that keeps the pulley from spinning on the crankshaft.
6. Reverse the steps to reinstall

You MUST make sure the blade is tight when you reinstall it. Also, the blade usually fits over a couple of pins - make sure they are lined up properly and the blade is installed right-side up.

SOURCE: Dual blade mower leaves uncut strips between blades.

Had same uneven mowing problem with new Toro Z4200 XTR mower. Problem was one side of the U-shaped rear deck hanger rod had popped out of its chassis mount (did hit something with mowing deck). Removed hanger chassis mount & its bolt. Put end of U-shaped rear deck hanger rod back in the chassis mount and remounted hanger chassis mount & its bolt. Z4200 now cuts lawn evenly again.

SOURCE: toro model 20056 push mower starts but cuts out

You will need to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb.cleaner. Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152), to clean the small portals and/or the jet in carb. These portals can become blocked. Check the small screen for debris. Reassemble and start.

If you need further assistance, just let me know.

SOURCE: Toro 22in Lawn mower. Loud gear noise when try to engage drive.

Problem is in the rear pinion gears on rear axle and the design of the axle itself. I have a 2005 model 20041 had the same problem. I found a Toro dealer that had the fix.The problem is creadted by the fact that there is too much "play" in the rear axle. You have to limit that play by installing shims, or washers First, but the 2 new rear pinion gears for the rear axle. While you're at it, you may as well buy 2 new rear wheels because the "grinding" has worn the sprockets on the reas r wheels.Next, get 2 "fender washers", 1/2" ID and about 1" OD. I found it easier to turn the mower over and set it on saw horses to work on it.( drain the gas and oil first). Remove both rear wheels, pinion gears and all the washers etc. (caution - keep all parts from one side together - do not pile all parts together - keep them seperated by wheel - the reason is I believe there is one more washer/shim on the right side than on the left). Now to put everything back together, find a spot on the axle where the washer will fit in between the standard stuff.Install new pinion gears and replace the rest of the washers/shims just as they came off. INstall new wheels and you'll be good as new!

Sounds like either the gears on the wheels or ends of the trans shaft are bad, or the internals of the trans are bad. Are the parts actually new-new, or used and new to the machine, you didn't specify. What happens when you manually spin the pulley on the top of the trans in either direction?

Yes it is the transmission. A Mower shop will charge you about $225 to fix.. I order parts online and fixed mine for $90. Transmission consist of 3 gears which turns the rear wheels to self-propel.

My toro 6.5hp 22" front drive mower does not dive

There is a transmission, a pinion gear connected to the belt end, and a larger bevel gear connected to the axle, all inside an aluminum shell, we could call it a basic transmission. On my Toro the bevel gear had flat spots on about a third of the teeth, hence it wasn't continuously driving the axle. A new pinion and bevel gear where found as a set on Ebay for $30 plus $5 shipping.

Also the plastic gears in each of the front wheels can wear out and you need new wheel assemblies, they cost about $15 apiece at Sears if you pick them up, $10 more if shipped. Take your old one in, they can match it.

How to change the drive belt on a Toro 20016 SP Mower

The Toro 20016 mower is a front wheel drive mower and fairly simple to change the belt on. Start by disconnecting the spark plug to prevent start ups while working on the machine.

Remove the blade and adapter. The adapter includes the pulley for the belt.
two screws under the mower, with 3/8 heads hold the black cover over the belt. remove the cover and now you will see the transmission
The transmission, depending on the year of your machine will have a guard holding the belt on. Bend or remove the guard to remove the belt. Install you belt in reverse order.

You can get parts and special tools like the blade stop at a store like www.arcolawn.com

Rear wheel drive does not push mower when engaged. But, when mower rear wheels are lifted off the ground, they turn weakly.

remove the rear wheels and check the gears in the wheels- they are plastic and part of the circumfrance on the inside of the wheel. If worn replace wheels.
also check belt- it should be tight with very little play when drive is engaged ( obvioulsy check this with engine off).

I have 6.5 hp toro mower and the self propelled wheels quit working. I need to know how to fix it - THANKS

Not sure which model you have, but the rear wheel drive that I have, 20070, transmission goes out every year. Toro had a real bad design on that transmission and they know it. They made a change in 2009 models to try and eliminate the problem and also give a lifetime warranty on the transmission. Model years 2006 thru 2008 has a single bearing on a half shaft and the torque of the drive belt is too much for that single bearing. I am on my second replacement and had an extreme conversation with Customer Service. Go past the first level, "Sorry It's Out of Warranty" to supervision and let them know about their product and insist they repair it. This has been going on for a month for me but I think you have to push these manufacturers to do what is right.

Install belt on toro mower model 70041

For removing/replacing the deck belt, the general method is:
  1. turn off engine, remove key and set parking brake
  2. disengage blade by putting blade engage lever into off (disengaged) position
  3. lower the cutting deck to the lowest position (closest to the ground)
  4. relieve the belt tension (depending on the model, use a 3/8 inch ratchet set to tighten in the square hole of the idler bracket)
  5. remove and replace the belt
NOTE: it's not necessary to completely remove the cutting deck.

Useful diagrams for removing the cutting deck, http://216.213.143.2/ProAuthor/ManProc.cfm?ManualID=425&ProcID=14794

For deck belt diagrams, http://216.213.143.2/ProAuthor/ManProc.cfm?ManualID=425&ProcID=14796

If the transmission drive belt needs to be replaced, several components must be removed and special tools (i.e. air/impact wrench) used in order to change the tractor's transmission drive belt. See an Authorized Toro Service Dealer to have your drive belt replaced.
