Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model
Will not start. Replaced battery thinking it was bad as it would not jump. Fuse is good. Doesn't even want to turn over almost like the starter is locked.
Make sure all connections are CLEAN first. Especially if your battery wire has a plug and socket connect at some point. To test the starter make sure you can tell which leads are which ( - Black = negative or + Red = positive) Don't guess or assume. MAKE SURE. Then you can test the tractor starter with your car battery and a pair of jumper cables. But (Und this is a big but!) Make sure the tractor battery is 12Volts and not 6 volts! If it is 6 volt you can't test it with your car battery.

If the main fuel pump doesn't begin running when jumped (you should definitely hear it humming), you either have a faulty fuel pump or faulty wiring to the pump (bad wiring is really common under an old 240, near the pump). This test of course assumes your battery is good.
If one of the fuses blows during this test, the pump circuit wiring is shorting to ground somewhere between the fuse panel and the pump.
