Question about Craftsman Garden

1 Answer

My craftman 550 Briggs & Stratton mower just turned 3 years old. The problem is when mowing the engine just stops. After putting more fuel into the almost full tank, priming the engine the mower will start, but will after a bit smell like something burning and quick again. I have checked the oil & put fuel stabilizer into the tank. The air filter appears to be fine. Not sure of the problem???

If the fuel line is dry after the fuel pump its usally the diaphram thats stuffed does it have a fuel tap in place? is it off? also i know with nem mowers just been come over from freight the fuel filter is full of oil for the first start up as the valves need lubrication first startup... take the fuel line off from the carb just have it hanging down for a start, then crank the mower over, you should then have fuel coming out of fuel line by then... see if that helps jay QLD AUS

SOURCE: Replacement part for Craftsman 650 Briggs & Stratton 22" multi cut mower Model #917.376741

You first need to locate the model number on the mower, not the Briggs engine. Then go to searspartsdirect.com and enter your model number on the right side of the web page. This will take you to a list of parts for your mower. Your model number should be located on the deck of the mower (you didn't say if it was a rider or a push). Rider model numbers are located on the rear of the body behind, on or under the seat. Push model numbers are found on the back of the deck between where the handles attach to the frame.

How is your compression? If it is low, your piston rings and/or the cylinder walls could be damaged and pulling oil up to the combustion chamber, which will burn oil and foul the plug. If you overfill the oil you could possibly get this also. When was the last time that you changed the oil and/or put oil in it? Do you currently have proper oil level?

After finishing mowing my lawn the other day, my mower leaked (dripped) gas from beneath the bottom of the carberator. What should I do to get the leaked stopped?

Ok, first thing you need to do is check your oil. Make sure no gas has gotten into the oil. if it has then be sure to drain it.
carberators today are really having problems with very tiny dirt particles making them malfunction. after cleaning my carb 3 times in one year and having to change the oil each time, i decided to get a 6 dollar fuel shut off valve. i cut the fuel line and installed the valve. when done mowing i turn the valve off and have not had a problem since. in fact i have put a valve on all my small engine equipment.

check your air filter. If it's clogged, the engine will spool up to keep from dying, run for about 15 seconds, then it will happen again. If that's it, just clean the air filter. Solved my problem

Troy, Unless you are using old fuel (it breaks down after 1 week) it sounds like you have a faulty spark plug. Replace this first, drain any old fuel and replace with fresh fuel (premium unleaded). A faulty plug will work one minute but then fail like you have described.

I have a 7 year-old craftsman mower with a 22 HP Briggs engine that has the same issue. After about an hour, the mower acts as if it is starving for fuel and then stalls. Then after about 5 minutes of sitting, it will run for a little while longer.
If your engine is similar to mine, then its carb has a fuel shut off solenoid which shuts off fuel to the Main Jet when Voltage is removed to prevent backfiring when the key is shut off.
Unfortunately, this solenoid can also cause the carb to starve for fuel when not working properly. In my case, when I cleaned the solenoid and the solenoid's connections, the tractor had no problem after that.

Hope that helps,
Steve
