Question about Soyo Cigar HD20 (fm-cigar20go) 20 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I was given a Soyo Cigar HD20 20GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive by my son. No directions came with it. How do I use it? When I plug it into the usb port, my screen shows that new hardware was detected, but then nothing else appears that allows me to update the hard drive. What should I do???

Some devices where shipped out without being properly initialized at the factory. This causes Windows not to be able to recognize the device when first plugged in.

Solution:
1 - Download the EZRecover Software from:
http://www.pctalk.info/dl/cigar_devices ... rV2003.zip

2 - Be sure your CigarUSB device is connected to the PC

3 - Unzip the file, and install the program.

4 - Run the program

5 - You'll notice that it will detect that it is a UsbFlashDisk, and it's disk size (256 mb, 128mb, etc.) That is your first indication that your device isn't broken. If it's not detected, then perhaps you'll be better off returning the device to where you bought it.

6 - Press the Recover button. It'll prompt a warning. Just go ahead. The lights (if visible) on your device will start blinking. That's your second indication your CigarUsb device is working.

7 - Once it finishes, remove your device and restart your PC

8 - Once it reboots, plug it back in. It'll start detecting it correctly and automatically configuring everything (in windows XP at least).

9 - Goto http://www.cigarusb.com/home/support.htm and find your CigarUsb model. Download the correct application tools software for it. (In my case, it's a Cigar2Pro - 256mb.).

10 - Install the software. It may ask you to reboot the PC. If it does, go ahead and do it.

11 - Once you reboot (if you where asked to), run the program: "USB Flash Drive Utility"

12 - It'll ask for a password. Just press OK

13 - You need to repartition your device. Press partition.

14 - Set how much memory you want for the secure partition (with password protection) and the standard one. In my case '0' for secured partition, 256mb for Standard. Press Start.

15 - Finally, you need to format your new partition(s). Press Format. Type in a label. Press Start.

Once it finishes, you can start using your device. You DON'T need to do this in every single computer you encounter. All this is only needed to be done the very FIRST time you use the device.

Hope this helps. Please dont forget to rate or vote for the answer! All the best!

How can I turn my netork hard drive into a External hard drive

Network hard drive is also an external har drive but its shared over a network. If you want it to be used a external hard drive connected directly to you computer, read below.

Your WD drive should have a USB port on it. You need to plug the drive into your laptop directly to be used as a external hard drive.

Please rate if helpful.

I need driver software for my external hard drive. I have the 320GB Simple tech.

drivers should be on the drive! on desktop- click on my computer, click on drive letter (right click)- click on properties- or click on 'open' - if it shows driver files, double click and install drivers, or you may need to format it!
good luck!

My drive is not recognized

I've had this problem before.

I tried a different cord and it started working again. Additionally i've had this work for me (see below)

Try This:

  1. Unplug all USB devices
  2. Turn off Ext Hard drive
  3. Shut down computer
  4. Power on ext hard drive (then wait like 1 min)
  5. Turn on computer
  6. Wait for windows to finish loading
  7. Plug in the USB cord from the ext hard drive to your computer (may take up to a minute for computer to recognize it)
  8. If it doesn't recognize it then keep trying it in different USB ports
If it still won't recognize get all the latest windows update and reboot. If that doesn't solve your issue try your external hard drive on some other computers, check to see if drive needs special drivers installed (which most don't).

From SimpleTech's website: "1) I have the drive plugged in but I cannot find the drive in "My Computer", why?
The most likely cause would be not enough power provided by a single USB port on your computer. Unplug the portable drive from the cable and unplug the cable from the computer. Now, plug the cable into 2 USB ports directly on your computer. (If you have a desktop, you should plug the USB cable directly into the USB ports on the back of the computer. If this is a laptop, you should plug directly into a USB ports on the computer. Do not plug into a USB hub or docking station). Then plug the drive into the cable. In a few seconds you should see the drive listed in the "My Computer" window as a SimpleDrivePS."

If all that fails you need to RMA (Return to Manufacturer) your external hard drive. Most hard drives have a pretty decent warranty on them. Your simpletech 250GB has a 3 year warranty on it. Info on the warranty can be found at http://www.simpletech.com/support/warranty/. If you want to RMA it, click the "Technical Support / RMA Request" on the left hand side of that page.

Drive not being recognized

Have you tried this in another PC with, say, WinXP? If it worked then it may be 1 of 2 problems:
1) Driver Issue- you may use a compatible driver and not necessarily a "Fantom" driver. WinME needs drivers for these devices unlike WinXP
2) The USB port is not giving enough power to the drive for it to run (a problem common in older PCs). I have an external USB harddisk that needs to use 2 USB ports in my old Dell laptop since 1 USB port can't supply the power it needs. The cable should have a dual-USB jack on one end, this is so you could use the power from the other USB port.

Hope this helps

Soyo Cigar HD20 Does Not Work in Windows 2000 Pro

Windows XP has built-in support for lots of USB devices, W2K doesn't. I went to the Soyo download site and it appears that your device has been discontinued, however, they do have driver downloads for Windows 98. I?ve had limited success with using W98 drivers in W2K but be prepared for odd behavior. Here is the link for the download: http://www.soyo.com/downloads/selectresults.php?language=English&col1=+Portable+Storage&col2=297&col3=All Good luck and please don?t forget to rate this post.

Lucy fox, Sorry for the late response, I was poking around history and found your posting. If you?re still around and these files are important your best bet at recover is trying a professional data recovery service. They are expensive but they will probably be able to retrieve you data. I?ve used Ontrack recovery before with good results: http://www.ontrack.com/special/0704drtmpgooglesoftware.aspx?psearch=google Hope things work out well.
