thanks for the suggestions - the problem is i cannot open the door at all. if i were to do that, i would then be able to follow through with the steps that you suggest. But how do i open the door....? the machine did not make the clicking sound that it normally does when its done with a cycle so something is wrong with the door latch do i get round that without resonating to 'violence' on the machine?

    Thanks for your response!!

The Generic Procedure to Open the Door Lock is Either to Remove or Replace it. The procedure is :-

You will need a cross head and two flat bladed screwdrivers (or

    1. Open the washing machine door wide and undo the 3 screws in the hinge
    (support door,
just in case it drops on your foot!).

    2. Once screws are removed, wiggle door up and down whilst
pulling it away from the machine. Door should come off.

    3. Lay door
down on a flat surface (covered with a towel to avoid scratches) with
    chrome trim facing down.

    4. Insert the tip of one of the flat bladed screwdrivers, into the small
gap between the inner white door panel and outer chrome trim. To avoid
damage, do not insert too far!

    5. Using the second flat bladed screwdriver in the same way, work your
way around the seam, levering it apart. About halfway round the chrome
trim should completely separate from the door.

    6. Undo the two retaining screws and carefully remove the broken handle
mechanism (so that you know which way round the two springs and other
    new parts go).

    7. Fit together the new latch, springs, center pin and handle receiver,
using the old one as guidance.

    8. Fit handle assembly to door.

    9. Fit handle to handle assembly the correct way round (this needs to be
fitted to help align the chrome trim in the next step).

    10. Replace chrome trim (snaps into place)

    11. Refit door
to hinge with the 3 screws removed in step 1 and test it opens and
    closes correctly.

    12. Sit back and admire your handy-work!

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

Sometimes pushing firmly on the door where the handle or latch is helps to release a jammed lock.Try this a few times and attempt to open the door.Be careful not to exert to much pressure when trying to open the door as you may do more damage. If the door still will not open it may be necessary to break the lock off. This is a tricky operation and removing the machine lid.BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS YOU MUST REMOVE THE APPLIANCE PLUG COMPLETELY FROM THE WALL SOCKET and wear protective glove and sleeve as it involves grabbing lock from inside the machine and physically bending it back and forth to remove or release the door. The lock obviously needs replacing and should now be able to be removed fully with the door open. Unscrew and make a note of the wiring (usually a small plug) or 3-4 separate wires.Once removed you also need to check the latch which is the piece on the door that would normally fit into the door lock when it is in situe. This should have resistance when moved backwards.(Spring loaded). If there is no resistance the handle (often plastic) is probably damaged and needs to be replaced along with the interlock device. The handle often comes in a small kit comprising of the handle itself,a tensioner spring and a small rolled steel locating bar.Fitting these new components should sort out your problem. Please note that the door handle kit can be tricky to fit and therefor you need to be EXTREMELY vigilant when removing the old one.Make note of every small detail and exact orientation of all parts.Sometimes the glass from the door has to be removed to fit the door handle kit so be very careful when removing glass and again note the position of the glass on the rim that holds it.Check the rim for damage also and replace if necessary.Rims are bought separately and come as inner and outer rims.Remember be careful to note the exact way you remove the door handle parts.Simple enough to do if you take heed of these warnings.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Hello Jennifer Brookman - Unfortunately from what you are describing it sounds like the washer is either experiencing a communication error from the control board or wiring failure. Since you have already tried the basic troubleshooting by flipping the household circuit breaker off, do you notice if the door is securely latching? If it is not, then the issue can also lie with a faulty door latch assembly. I suggest contacting a professional for a proper diagnosis and to move forward accurately.

Cannot open the door of electrolux perfect balance washing machine

Hello Nina DeLuca - Try resetting the unit by unplugging it or flipping the household circuit breaker off. Wait approximately ten minutes. If the door does not open, then it sounds like the washer is possibly experiencing a communication problem with the control board, wiring failure or faulty door lock. Contact a professional to move forward accurately to properly diagnose/repair unit.
